LivaNova PLC

Updated

Overview

LivaNova PLC is a global medical-technology company that develops and sells medical devices, therapies and related services. Its stated mission is to “create ingenious medical solutions that ignite patient turnarounds.” Its core businesses are Cardiopulmonary, serving cardiac surgery, and Neuromodulation, including implantable vagus nerve stimulation therapies.[1]

Cardiopulmonary products include heart-lung machines, oxygenators, heater-coolers and related equipment and services.[2] Neuromodulation includes the VNS Therapy System, used for drug-resistant epilepsy and difficult-to-treat depression.[3][4] LivaNova reports a presence in more than 100 countries; its people page describes approximately 3,300 employees worldwide.[5][6]

For the year ended December 31, 2025, LivaNova reported revenue of $1.39 billion.[7] The company was formed through the combination of Sorin and Cyberonics, completed in 2015.[8] [1]

Products & services

LivaNova’s cardiopulmonary products include heart-lung machines (HLMs), oxygenators, autotransfusion systems, perfusion tubing, cannulae and accessories. Its named systems include **Essenz**, an HLM/perfusion system with an embedded patient monitor and sensing technology; **S5/S5 Pro** HLMs; **Inspire** oxygenators; **XTRA** autotransfusion systems; and **3T Heater-Cooler** devices. HLMs temporarily support heart and lung function and circulate oxygenated blood during surgery; oxygenators exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide, while autotransfusion systems collect, process and reinfuse a patient’s shed blood.[9]

The **VNS Therapy** portfolio includes an implantable pulse generator connected by a lead to the left vagus nerve, along with implant accessories and programming equipment. Named generators include **Demipulse (Model 103), AspireSR (Model 106), SenTiva (Model 1000), and SenTiva Duo (Model 1000-D)**. AspireSR and SenTiva offer AutoStim stimulation that responds to heart-rate changes potentially associated with seizures; SenTiva also supports day/night and scheduled programming and event logging.[14]

Related services include cardiopulmonary equipment maintenance and technical support, as well as clinician training and programming resources for VNS Therapy.[2][19] LivaNova reports revenue by segment rather than by individual product: in the first half of 2026, Cardiopulmonary revenue was $430.231 million and Neuromodulation revenue was $318.733 million—approximately 57.4% and 42.6%, respectively, of their combined revenue.[20] [9]

Geographic presence

In FY2025, LivaNova generated $739.6 million of revenue in the U.S., $269.2 million in Europe, and $379.3 million in Rest of World, out of $1,388.1 million total. These amounts represent approximately 53.3%, 19.4%, and 27.3% of revenue, respectively (calculated from reported figures). Europe comprises 16 listed countries, including the UK, Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain; Rest of World covers other countries where the company operates. The filing reports sales by region rather than individual country.[21][22]

LivaNova had approximately 3,300 employees across 34 countries at December 31, 2025; employee numbers are not broken out by geography. Its principal executive office is in the UK, Neuromodulation is headquartered in the U.S., and Cardiopulmonary is headquartered in Italy. Manufacturing sites are in the U.S., Italy, Germany, Australia and Brazil, while R&D facilities are in the U.S. and Italy. The company reports about 1.0 million square feet of combined manufacturing and R&D space, 44% of it in the U.S.; 56% of this space is company-owned.[23] [21]

Business segments

LivaNova reports two segments: **Cardiopulmonary**, which includes heart-lung machines, oxygenators, autotransfusion and perfusion tubing systems, cannulae, accessories, and related services; and **Neuromodulation**, focused on therapies for drug-resistant epilepsy and difficult-to-treat depression, including its VNS Therapy System. Neuromodulation also includes development and clinical testing of the aura6000 System for obstructive sleep apnea.[26]

For FY2025, Cardiopulmonary generated $785.4 million, approximately **56.6%** of consolidated net revenue; Neuromodulation generated $592.8 million, approximately **42.7%**. The remaining $9.9 million, or about **0.7%**, was reported as Other Revenue, not as a reportable segment. Other includes revenue from the former Advanced Circulatory Support segment and certain unallocated rental and site-services income; ACS standalone cannulae and accessories are included in Cardiopulmonary.[27] [26]

Company history

Sorin’s industrial roots date to 1956, when it began as an Italian nuclear-energy venture; Cyberonics was founded in 1987 to develop vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) therapy. The first VNS patient implant took place in 1988, and the U.S. FDA approved the therapy for certain patients with drug-resistant epilepsy in 1997.[30]

In 2015, Sorin and Cyberonics combined to form LivaNova, bringing Sorin’s cardiac and cardiopulmonary technologies together with Cyberonics’ neuromodulation business. The merger closed on October 19, 2015, and LivaNova began trading publicly.[34]

From 2017 to 2022, LivaNova expanded through acquisitions including ImThera Medical, TandemLife and ALung, while also reshaping its portfolio: it sold its Cardiac Rhythm Management business in 2018 and completed the initial divestiture of its Heart Valves business in 2021.[37]

The company introduced the Essenz Heart-Lung Machine in the U.S. in 2023 after receiving FDA clearance. In 2024, it moved to wind down its Advanced Circulatory Support business and focus on Cardiopulmonary and Neuromodulation; in 2026, the FDA approved its aura6000 system for specified adults with moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea.[42] [43]
