LIGAND PHARMACEUTICALS INC

Updated

Overview

Ligand Pharmaceuticals Inc. is a biopharmaceutical royalty and technology company. It invests in and structures royalty interests in drug programs, licenses drug-development technologies, and earns revenue from products developed and commercialized largely by partners. Its portfolio spans commercial and development-stage programs, with Captisol and NITRICIL among its defining technology platforms.[1]

Ligand’s partner-led business has an international reach; its headquarters are in Jupiter, Florida, with additional listed office and laboratory locations in the United States. The company describes its purpose as funding programs that can improve and extend lives around the world.[7] The company reported 2025 revenue and income of $268.1 million and 40+ employees as of July 14, 2026.[10][9] [1]

Products & services

Ligand’s product portfolio is built around medicines commercialized by partner companies and royalty-bearing products. Marketed products include Filspari (sparsentan), approved for IgA nephropathy and, in 2026, for reducing proteinuria in certain adults and children with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis; Kyprolis (carfilzomib) for multiple myeloma; and Ohtuvayre (ensifentrine), a maintenance treatment for COPD that combines bronchodilator and anti-inflammatory activity through selective PDE3/PDE4 inhibition.[11] Other partner products include Rylaze, the pneumococcal vaccines Capvaxive and Vaxneuvance, teriparatide injection, Qarziba, Evomela and Nexterone.[14]

Ligand also supplies Captisol, a chemically modified cyclodextrin excipient designed to improve drug solubility and stability. It is supplied as solid powder and cGMP aqueous concentrate, and is used in medicines including Kyprolis, Veklury, Nexterone and Evomela. Ligand reports 17 FDA-approved Captisol-enabled products. Its Pelican protein-expression technology has been used in development of teriparatide.[5]

The 2026 portfolio also includes partnered development-stage programs such as Qtorin (rapamycin) for vascular and lymphatic malformations, volixibat for liver diseases, ersodetug for tumor hyperinsulinism, AVIM Therapy for blood-pressure treatment, and lasofoxifene for breast cancer. Ligand reports royalties by product, alongside revenue from Captisol and other sources; its filings do not present the named products as percentages of total company performance.[12] [11]

Geographic presence

Ligand Pharmaceuticals lists its principal executive office in Jupiter, Florida, and contact offices in San Diego, California, and Boston, Massachusetts [7][21]. The company reported more than 40 employees as of July 14, 2026, but does not disclose their distribution by location [9].

Ligand describes an infrastructure-light operating model that relies on partners for sales, marketing, manufacturing, and research and development; the available disclosures do not identify a geographic breakdown of Ligand-owned operating or manufacturing sites [3][4]. Its royalty interests can cover international territories, including worldwide rights for FILSPARI and EMEA rights for Ryjunea [22][23]. Disclosures reviewed do not provide revenue or sales by country or region; reported revenue information is not geographically segmented [24]. [7]

Business segments

Ligand reports one operating and reportable segment, focused on the development and licensing of biopharmaceutical assets. Its Q1 2026 filing describes the segment’s focus as investing in the clinical development and commercialization of high-value medicines.[27][28] The sole reportable segment accounts for 100% of reported segment results; the company does not report a percentage split across multiple segments. Its segment measure is “total revenue and income,” rather than revenue alone.[27] [27][28]

Company history

Ligand was founded as Progenx, Inc. in 1987 by Brook Byers and adopted the name Ligand Pharmaceuticals in 1989.[29] In 2008, it acquired Pharmacopeia, followed in 2011 by CyDex Pharmaceuticals, bringing the Captisol drug-formulation technology platform into its portfolio.[30]

During the 2010s, Ligand increasingly built a partner-funded portfolio of development programs and royalty interests, including licensing programs to Viking Therapeutics in 2014 and acquiring rights to programs from Selexis in 2015.[32][33] It acquired Vernalis in 2018 and sold Vernalis’s research and development business in 2020, retaining selected partnered programs and related intellectual property.[34][35]

In 2022, Ligand spun off OmniAb as a separate company, and Todd C. Davis became Ligand’s CEO in December.[36][37] Ligand acquired assets from Novan in 2023, including the berdazimer gel program, and launched Pelthos Therapeutics in 2024 to advance commercialization of the resulting product, ZELSUVMI.[38] In 2024, it also acquired Apeiron Biologics, adding royalty rights to QARZIBA.[41] In 2025, its Pelthos subsidiaries completed a combination with Channel Therapeutics.[42][43] [5]
