Knight-Swift Transportation Holdings Inc.

Updated

Overview

Knight-Swift Transportation Holdings Inc. is a North American freight transportation and logistics company. Its principal businesses are Truckload, less-than-truckload (LTL), Logistics, and Intermodal, with services including dry van, refrigerated, dedicated, brokerage, cross-border, and intermodal transportation. The company operates a nationwide network of business units and terminals in the United States and Mexico, serving customers across North America.[1]

For the year ended December 31, 2025, Knight-Swift reported revenue of approximately $7.47 billion. The company’s About page describes its workforce as approximately 24,000.[5][6]

Knight-Swift was formed in 2017 through the merger of Knight Transportation and Swift Transportation; Swift traces its history to 1966. The company describes its objective as pursuing industry-leading margins and growth while providing safe, high-quality, cost-effective transportation solutions.[7] [1]

Products & services

Knight-Swift’s truckload services move full-trailer shipments directly from origin to destination. Offerings include dry van, refrigerated, drayage, dedicated, expedited and cross-border truckload services; the company also lists flatbed, heavy haul, port and Canada-related services.[9] In the second quarter of 2026, truckload generated approximately 64.3% of consolidated revenue.[13]

Its less-than-truckload (LTL) service combines shipments from multiple customers and routes them through service centers for sorting and consolidation. The network is designed to provide regional transit speeds with nationwide coverage; in Q2 2026, reported average length of haul was 701 miles and average shipment weight was 1,060 pounds.[14] LTL accounted for approximately 20.0% of consolidated revenue in that quarter.[13]

Logistics services match customer freight needs with third-party trucking and rail capacity, including brokerage and freight-management services. Intermodal services use rail-carrier agreements for longer-haul movements and include power-only transportation using Knight-Swift’s trailers.[9][10] Logistics represented approximately 6.7% and intermodal approximately 5.4% of consolidated revenue in Q2 2026.[13] These approximate shares are calculated from reported segment revenue and consolidated revenue; the company reports segment revenue, rather than these percentages.[13] [9]

Geographic presence

Knight-Swift describes its truckload and logistics service reach as spanning the United States, Mexico, and Canada; its company materials identify a nationwide network of business units and terminals in the United States and Mexico.[6][16] Its LTL operation reported approximately 180 facilities and a door count of about 6,900 in 2026Q2, and uses partner carriers to provide national customer coverage beyond its direct network.[17] In FY2025, it reported adding 59 LTL service centers organically and described its aim as completing coverage of the 48 contiguous states.[3]

The company identifies Phoenix, Arizona, as its corporate headquarters; its report also lists U.S. Xpress headquarters in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and ACT headquarters in Dothan, Alabama.[18][19] Knight-Swift reported 37,100 full-time employees in FY2025 but did not provide a geographic breakdown of employees.[20] Its FY2025 and 2026Q2 reports do not disclose revenue by country or region; revenue is presented by operating segment.[21][22] [17]

Business segments

Knight-Swift reports four reportable segments: Truckload, LTL, Logistics, and Intermodal. Truckload provides full-truckload transportation; LTL provides less-than-truckload service through a super-regional network; Logistics includes brokerage and specialized logistics solutions; and Intermodal transports freight by rail using company containers and equipment, with drayage between railheads and customer locations.[3]

For the year ended December 31, 2025, approximate shares of consolidated revenue were Truckload 65.2% ($4,865.0 million), LTL 19.8% ($1,478.5 million), Logistics 7.6% ($570.3 million), and Intermodal 4.9% ($364.9 million), based on total revenue of $7,469.7 million.[25] The segment tables also include All Other Segments, which generated $287.5 million (about 3.8% of revenue), and intersegment eliminations; these are not additional named reportable segments.[19][25] [3]

Company history

Swift Transportation was founded by Jerry Moyes in 1966. Knight Transportation was established in 1990 by cousins Kevin, Keith, Randy, and Gary Knight.[26][27]

The two carriers announced an all-stock combination in April 2017, and the merger closed on September 8, creating Knight-Swift Transportation Holdings while retaining the Knight and Swift operating brands.[28][29] The company expanded through acquisitions, including Abilene Motor Express in 2018 and less-than-truckload carriers AAA Cooper Transportation and Midwest Motor Express in 2021.[30]

Knight-Swift completed its acquisition of U.S. Xpress in July 2023 and acquired the LTL division of Dependable Highway Express in July 2024.[33][34] Adam Miller became CEO in February 2024, succeeding David Jackson; in June 2026, co-founder and Executive Chairman Kevin Knight announced his retirement.[35][36] [26]
