KINROSS GOLD CORP

Updated

Overview

Kinross Gold Corporation is a Toronto-headquartered gold mining company founded in 1993. Its core business is the production of gold, with operations and projects across the United States, Brazil, Mauritania, Chile and Canada. This geographic footprint makes it a global mining company rather than one focused on a single market.[1][2]

Kinross states that its approach is to create value through operational excellence, financial discipline and responsible mining. Its responsible-mining priorities include worker safety, environmental stewardship and benefits for host communities.[1][3] [1]

Products & services

Kinross Gold’s principal product is gold. It produces gold in doré form, which is sent to refiners to make bullion; some operations also produce gold concentrate. Silver is produced as a byproduct.[4] [4]

Geographic presence

Kinross Gold’s producing operations are located in the United States, Brazil, Mauritania and Chile, while its Great Bear project is in Canada. Its U.S. operations include Fort Knox, Round Mountain and Bald Mountain; its other producing mines include Paracatu in Brazil, Tasiast in Mauritania and La Coipa in Chile. The company’s principal executive office is in Toronto, Ontario.[5][6]

In 2024, its operating segments reported approximately $1.86 billion in metal sales from U.S. mines, $1.46 billion from Mauritania, $1.26 billion from Brazil and $573 million from Chile. These figures describe sales attributed to mining operations, not the locations of customers.[7] [5]

Business segments

Kinross reports a geographic segment breakdown for its gold-mining business. Its U.S. operations include Fort Knox, Round Mountain, Bald Mountain and Manh Choh; Tasiast is in Mauritania, Paracatu is in Brazil, and La Coipa is in Chile. These mine names describe the operations within each area, rather than a separate mine-by-mine revenue breakdown in the geographic disclosure.[6]

Based on 2024 metal sales, the United States contributed approximately 36% of the reported total, Mauritania 28%, Brazil 24% and Chile 11%. The percentages are calculated from Kinross’s reported geographic metal sales and are rounded.[8] [6][8]

Company history

Kinross Gold was founded in 1993 and expanded through a series of mergers and acquisitions. Its 1998 merger with Amax Gold added the Fort Knox, Kubaka and Refugio mines. In 2003, Kinross completed a combination with TVX Gold and Echo Bay Mines, substantially enlarging its portfolio of gold operations.[9]

Kinross completed its acquisition of Bema Gold in 2007 and combined with Red Back Mining in 2010, gaining the Tasiast mine in Mauritania and the Chirano mine in Ghana. It further expanded its Nevada holdings in 2016 by acquiring Bald Mountain and an additional interest in Round Mountain. In 2022, Kinross acquired Great Bear Resources and completed the sale of its Russian assets.[12] [9]
