KDDI CORP

Updated

Overview

KDDI Corporation is a Japan-based telecommunications and ICT group. Its core business is mobile and fixed-line connectivity, complemented by consumer services and business solutions. In Japan, its mobile brands include au, UQ mobile and povo; for corporate customers, it provides network, cloud and other ICT services, including support for operations overseas.[1]

KDDI describes its mission as connecting people and society through communications. Established in 1984, the group reported consolidated operating revenue of approximately ¥5.92 trillion for the fiscal year ended March 2025 and 64,636 consolidated employees as of March 31, 2025. Japan is its principal market, while its business services and network operations extend internationally.[4] [1]

Products & services

KDDI’s consumer mobile services are offered under three brands: au, UQ mobile and povo. au provides mobile connectivity, including 5G; UQ mobile offers plans on the au 5G/4G LTE network; and povo 2.0 lets customers buy app-based data and calling “toppings” rather than a standard monthly plan. KDDI also sells au Hikari home fiber broadband, with 1Gbps service and, in eligible areas, best-effort 5Gbps and 10Gbps options.[8]

Its consumer services extend beyond connectivity. au PAY supports app-based code and online payments, while au Jibun Bank provides internet banking through a mobile app.[13][14]

For businesses, KDDI provides communications, IoT connectivity, digital solutions and data-center services. Its WAKONX platform combines industry-tailored network design with partner technologies, while its Telehouse data-center offering provides interconnection and facilities with redundant power and cooling, access controls, and round-the-clock operations. In the fiscal year ended March 2025, Personal Services accounted for approximately 80% of consolidated external-customer revenue and Business Services approximately 20%; these are segment shares, not revenue percentages for individual products.[15] [18]

Geographic presence

KDDI is headquartered in Tokyo and operates mobile services across Japan, with service-area information organized by prefecture. In Okinawa, it provides au services jointly with Okinawa Cellular Telephone Company, which is headquartered in Naha.[1]

Outside Japan, KDDI lists business locations across Asia and Oceania, including Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam, as well as other markets in the region. It also has operations in the Americas and a London-based regional headquarters for Europe, the Middle East, Africa and the Commonwealth of Independent States. These locations describe its operating footprint; a country-by-country revenue or employee distribution is not established by the cited information.[22] [1]

Business segments

KDDI reports two main business segments: **Personal Services**, focused on individual customers, and **Business Services**, focused on corporate customers. Personal Services includes the au, UQ mobile and povo mobile brands and related consumer services. Business Services combines telecommunications with enterprise offerings such as IoT, data centers, digital business-process outsourcing, security and digital-transformation services.[25][26]

For the fiscal year ended March 2025, Personal Services accounted for approximately **80.0%** of revenue from external customers, while Business Services accounted for **19.6%**; other activities contributed the remaining **0.4%**. These shares are calculated from KDDI’s reported segment revenue and use external-customer revenue rather than figures that include sales between segments.[6] [25]

Company history

KDDI traces its origins to Dai-ni Denden Planning Company, established in 1984 and renamed DDI Corporation in 1985. In October 2000, DDI merged with KDD and IDO to form KDDI; the company adopted the KDDI Corporation name in April 2001. Its mobile services were brought together under the au brand, followed by the launch of CDMA2000 1x service in 2002 and CDMA 1X WIN in 2003.[30]

KDDI absorbed the TU-KA mobile-phone companies in 2005, consolidating their operations with au. It introduced au Smart Value, a bundled mobile and fixed-line offering, in 2012. In 2013, cable television and broadband operator J:COM became a KDDI consolidated subsidiary, expanding the company’s fixed-line and media businesses. KDDI launched commercial au 5G service in 2020.[33] [30]
