Overview
Kajima Corporation is a Japanese construction and real estate development group founded in 1840. Its core businesses are building construction and civil engineering, supported by architectural design, engineering, and real estate development. The group works across the property and infrastructure lifecycle, from planning and construction to operation, maintenance, and renovation.[1][2][3]
Kajima operates in Japan and overseas, with a presence in North America, Asia, Oceania, and Europe. Its stated philosophy links technical and creative progress with a contribution to society. Consolidated revenue was approximately ¥2.9 trillion in the fiscal year ended March 2025, and Kajima Corporation reported 8,854 employees as of March 31, 2025; that employee figure is for the company rather than the consolidated group.[4][3][5] [1][2][3][4][5]
Products & services
Kajima Corporation provides project-based civil engineering and building construction, architectural design and engineering, and real estate development. Its services cover infrastructure and building projects rather than standardized, mass-produced goods. Its domestic subsidiaries also provide specialist construction and engineering services, construction materials, property leasing and building rental; overseas subsidiaries undertake construction and real estate development.[6]
Kajima’s construction technologies include A⁴CSEL, a system that issues task plans to automated construction machinery so a small team can supervise multiple machines. Its materials include SUQCEM, an ultra-high-strength, steel-fiber-reinforced concrete with a stated design standard strength of 180 N/mm²; ECC, a ductile cementitious composite designed to control cracking; and CO₂-SUICOM, concrete that absorbs and fixes carbon dioxide during manufacture or curing. Its CCb method adds post-installed shear reinforcement to existing reinforced-concrete structures, while its seismic-control offerings include damping devices for buildings.[7][8][9][10][11][12]
For the year ended March 2025, building construction accounted for approximately 36% of consolidated external revenue, civil engineering 14%, and real estate development and other activities 3%. Domestic subsidiaries and affiliates contributed 8%, and overseas subsidiaries and affiliates 38%; those two subsidiary categories span multiple offerings rather than individual products.[6] [6][7][8][9][10][11][12]
Geographic presence
Kajima Corporation is headquartered in Tokyo, Japan. Its overseas regional bases are in the United States, the United Kingdom, Singapore, China, Taiwan and Australia. Its network extends across North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific.[1][13][14]
For the year ended March 31, 2025, Japan accounted for ¥1,795.0 billion, or approximately 61.6%, of Kajima’s ¥2,911.8 billion in revenue. North America was its largest overseas region at ¥686.8 billion (23.6% of total revenue), followed by Asia at ¥214.3 billion (7.4%), Oceania at ¥145.0 billion (5.0%) and Europe at ¥66.7 billion (2.3%). Other areas contributed ¥3.9 billion. Together, regions outside Japan accounted for approximately 38.4% of revenue.[15] [13][15][15][15][15][15][15][1][14]
Business segments
Kajima reports five business segments. Civil Engineering covers civil-engineering construction undertaken by the parent company, while Building Construction covers its building projects. Real Estate Development and Other comprises the parent company’s real estate development, design and engineering activities. For the year ended March 31, 2025, these segments contributed approximately 14%, 36% and 3%, respectively, of consolidated revenue from external customers.[6]
Domestic Subsidiaries and Affiliates, accounting for approximately 8% of revenue, includes construction-material sales, specialized construction and engineering services, leasing and building rentals, primarily in Japan. Overseas Subsidiaries and Affiliates contributed approximately 38% and encompasses construction, real estate development and other activities across North America, Europe, Asia and Oceania. The overseas segment therefore should not be interpreted as construction revenue alone.[6] [16][17][6]
Company history
Kajima traces its origins to 1840, when Iwakichi Kajima began a construction business in Edo, now Tokyo. Kajima Gumi was established in 1880 and entered railway construction with work on the Tsuruga Line. The business undertook projects in Korea and Taiwan from 1899 and was incorporated in 1930.[2][18][1]
After World War II, Kajima resumed overseas construction with the Baluchaung hydropower project in Burma, now Myanmar, in 1954. It established a U.S. presence through Kajima International in 1964 and completed Tokyo’s Kasumigaseki Building in 1968, a milestone in its high-rise construction work.[19][20][21] [2][18][1][19][20][21]
