Company history
JPMorgan Chase traces its roots to the Manhattan Company, chartered in 1799, and to several other banking and financial businesses that later came together. The Morgan banking lineage took shape with Drexel, Morgan & Co. in 1871, while Chase National Bank was founded in 1877. In 1955, Chase National merged with the Bank of the Manhattan Company to form The Chase Manhattan Bank.[20][21][22]
A series of mergers consolidated major predecessor institutions: Chemical Banking Corporation merged with Manufacturers Hanover in 1991, then combined with Chase Manhattan in 1996. In 2000, Chase and J.P. Morgan merged, creating J.P. Morgan Chase & Co.[23][22][24]
In 2004, the company completed its merger with Bank One, expanding its consumer-banking and card businesses; Jamie Dimon became president and chief operating officer of the combined company, then CEO in 2006. In 2008, JPMorgan Chase acquired Bear Stearns and Washington Mutual’s banking operations, further broadening its businesses.[25][26][27][28] [20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28]
