Company profile

Joby Aviation, Inc.

Updated

Overview

Joby Aviation, Inc. is a U.S.-based advanced air mobility company developing and manufacturing piloted, all-electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. Its aircraft is designed to carry a pilot and up to four passengers, and the company’s stated mission is to make transportation faster and easier through clean, quiet aerial travel. Joby began in 2009 and is pursuing both air-taxi services and aircraft-related commercial opportunities.[1]

Headquartered in California, Joby lists U.S. operations and facilities in Europe, China and Costa Rica, giving it an international footprint. Its investor-relations site describes a team of more than 1,700 engineers and experts. In its 2026 second quarter filing, the company reported revenue of $38.639 million for the quarter and $62.885 million for the six months ended June 30, 2026; this revenue reflects its broader operations, including passenger aviation activities.[5] [1]

Products & services

Joby’s primary aircraft product is a piloted, all-electric eVTOL air taxi designed for one pilot and up to four passengers, with a target payload of 1,000 pounds, a maximum speed of up to 200 mph, and a range of up to 100 miles per charge. Its design uses six electric motors and six propellers. These are target specifications; in the latest available 2026 reporting, the aircraft was still undergoing FAA type certification, with the company targeting first passengers in 2026.[8]

Joby is developing an on-demand aerial ridesharing service and customer app, as well as a proprietary operating system intended to integrate aircraft manufacturing, operations, and maintenance data. Its electric-aircraft charging interface is designed to support battery conditioning, data offload, and simultaneous charging of multiple battery packs. These are development efforts, not currently available Joby eVTOL passenger services.[11]

Other offerings include Blade’s helicopter and fixed-wing passenger charter brokerage, customer-directed and on-base government flights, engineering services, and third-party aircraft leasing. Joby is also developing defense-related capabilities, including SuperPilot autonomous-flight technology and a separate hybrid/turbine-electric VTOL demonstrator, distinct from its piloted all-electric air taxi.[14]

For the six months ended June 30, 2026, reported revenue was $62.885 million: $57.928 million from passenger revenue (about 92.1%) and $4.957 million from other revenue (about 7.9%). Passenger revenue relates to charter activity, not Joby eVTOL passenger service; eVTOL aircraft sales and eVTOL passenger-service revenue were not reported separately.[20] [8]

Geographic presence

Joby Aviation is headquartered in Santa Cruz, California. Its 2025 Form 10-K lists U.S. locations in Santa Cruz, San Carlos and Marina, California; Washington, D.C.; Dayton, Ohio; and New York, as well as locations in Munich and Stuttgart, Germany; Linz, Austria; San Jose, Costa Rica; and Shenzhen, China. The company reported about 162,000 square feet of owned and 49,000 square feet of leased space at its headquarters.[5]

Its geographic footprint includes engineering and manufacturing in San Carlos and Marina. In 2025, Marina had aircraft assembly, machining, manufacturing and flight-test facilities, and Joby completed a new 226,000-square-foot manufacturing and training building there. Ohio is the planned high-rate production location; Joby acquired an additional 728,000-square-foot facility in January 2026.[21][22] Joby’s investor-relations FAQ lists offices in Santa Cruz, San Carlos and Marina, Washington, D.C., and Munich, and reports more than 1,600 employees, but does not provide a workforce breakdown by location or a dated headcount.[23]

Joby’s intended aircraft-service markets include the United States and Dubai; it has also pursued certification and commercialization in the U.K., Japan, South Korea, Australia, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. These are planned or pursued markets, not evidence of established Joby eVTOL passenger service.[24][25] Its 2025 acquisition of Blade added an air-charter-broker business and customer and airport infrastructure in New York City and Southern Europe; the 2026 second-quarter filing describes these as Blade markets.[26][27] Joby’s 2025 Form 10-K and 2026 second-quarter Form 10-Q do not disclose revenue by country or region.[28] [5]

Business segments

Joby Aviation reports one operating and reportable segment, “air transportation and related services” (“Services”), which therefore represents 100% of reported segment revenue. It does not disclose percentage contributions for activities within the segment.[15]

Services includes research, development, testing, and manufacturing of eVTOL aircraft and supporting systems, as well as passenger transportation, customer-directed flights, and on-base operations for U.S. Department of Defense agencies. Passenger transportation includes helicopter and fixed-wing services.[15][29] [15][29]

Company history

Joby Aviation was founded in 2009 by JoeBen Bevirt. Its development progressed from a subscale demonstrator in 2015 to a full-scale demonstrator in 2017, which completed a transition flight that year.[4][30] In 2020, the company announced a $590 million Series C financing, with Toyota investing $394 million and becoming a strategic partner.[31]

In January 2021, Joby completed its acquisition of Uber Elevate, Uber’s aerial-ridesharing business.[32] That August, Joby completed its merger with Reinvent Technology Partners and began trading publicly on the New York Stock Exchange as JOBY.[33] In 2025, Joby completed its acquisition of Blade Urban Air Mobility’s passenger business, adding an established urban air-mobility operation to its history.[34][35] [32]
