Overview
Jerónimo Martins is an international food distribution and retail group, with businesses spanning food retail, supermarkets, cash-and-carry and food service, proximity grocery, and health and beauty. Its principal brands include Biedronka, Pingo Doce, Recheio, Ara and Hebe; its main markets include Portugal, Poland, Colombia and Slovakia. The company states its mission is to make safe, healthy and affordable food solutions and products available to everyone.[1][2]
The Group reported FY2025 sales of €35,991 million and had 147,709 employees at year-end 2025. Its history dates to 1792, when Jerónimo Martins opened a shop in Lisbon’s Chiado district.[3][4][5] [3][1][2][4][5]
Products & services
Jerónimo Martins’ product offer includes food retail, private-label ranges and specialist health and beauty products. In Portugal, Pingo Doce sells fresh food and private-label products, including BALANCE lighter ready meals and Botânico. It also offers prepared food through Comida Fresca restaurants, takeaway and two central kitchens. Recheio serves food-service and hospitality customers with products including its Masterchef range.[6][7][8]
Biedronka offers food and non-food products, including private-label ranges such as Dada for babies, children and mothers, as well as personal-care products and cosmetics. Disclosed product attributes include vegan cosmetics, products with high proportions of natural ingredients, and personal-care products without microplastics.[9][10] Hebe specialises in health and beauty, offering established, private and exclusive brands, in-store expert advice and e-commerce. Its product ranges include Hebe Naturals and vegan cosmetics.[11][12]
In Colombia, Ara’s food assortment includes more than 600 private-brand products developed with local suppliers.[13] [10][11][6][7][8][9][12][13]
Geographic presence
Jeronimo Martins’ principal operating geographies are Poland, Portugal and Colombia, with a smaller presence in Slovakia. At 30 June 2026, its reported network comprised 3,897 Biedronka, 412 Hebe, 498 Pingo Doce, 43 Recheio and 1,708 Ara stores. These are banner totals rather than a precise country-by-country store breakdown; Biedronka’s total includes its Slovak operations.[14][15]
For FY2025, external-customer sales were €25.969 billion in Poland (about 72.2% of Group sales), €6.732 billion in Portugal (18.7%) and €3.228 billion in Colombia (9.0%); a further €62 million (0.2%) was reported under “Others, eliminations and adjustments.” These percentages are calculated from the reported €35.991 billion consolidated total, and Slovakia is not separately quantified in the segment sales table.[16]
At year-end 2025, the Group reported 147,709 employees: 92,295 in Poland, 35,360 in Portugal, 19,461 in Colombia, 484 in Slovakia, 56 in Morocco and 53 in Czechia.[4] The Group’s registered corporate address is in Lisbon, Portugal; the subsidiaries listing also identifies a Jerónimo Martins Colombia entity in Bogotá.[17][18] [14][15][16][17][18][4]
Business segments
Jerónimo Martins reports five operating segments: Portugal Retail (Pingo Doce supermarkets), Portugal Cash & Carry (Recheio’s cash-and-carry wholesale and foodservice business), Poland Retail (Biedronka), Poland Health and Beauty (Hebe), and Colombia Retail (Ara). Other businesses are not separately reported as segments because of low materiality; management monitors performance geographically and by business.[19][20][21][22][23][24]
In H1 2026, the banners’ approximate shares of Group sales were Biedronka 68.7%, Pingo Doce 14.6%, Ara 10.9%, Recheio 3.7%, and Hebe 1.7%. The figures are reported by banner; together they account for about 99.6% of Group sales.[25] [19][20][21][22][23][24][25][25][25][25][25][25]
Company history
Jerónimo Martins traces its origins to a small store opened in Lisbon’s Chiado district in 1792. In 1921, Francisco Manuel dos Santos and Elysio Pereira do Vale took over the business, beginning the Santos family’s association with the company; Alexandre Soares dos Santos assumed leadership in 1968.[5][26]
The Group’s modern food-retail development included Recheio’s establishment in 1972 and the opening of the first Pingo Doce store in 1980. It partnered with Delhaize in 1985, acquired a 60% stake in Recheio in 1989, and expanded into Poland in 1995, where its Biedronka business grew through further store acquisitions. Later milestones included launching Hebe in Poland in 2011 and entering Colombia with Ara in 2013. Pedro Soares dos Santos became CEO in 2010 and Chairman in 2013. In 2025, Biedronka opened its first store in Slovakia, marking expansion beyond Poland.[27][28][29][30][31][32][33][34] [5][26][27][28][29][30][31][32][33][34]
