Company history
Established in Melbourne in 1888 as an import business, James Hardie began importing fibre-cement products in 1903. The company was listed on the Australian Stock Exchange in 1951. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, it developed asbestos-free fibre-cement products; it stopped using asbestos in building products in 1985 and in pipes in 1987. Its first U.S. fibre-cement plant opened in Fontana, California, in 1990, marking the start of a major international expansion.[42][43][44]
In 2001, James Hardie restructured under a Dutch holding company. It moved its corporate domicile to Ireland in 2010 and became James Hardie Industries plc in 2012. The 2018 acquisition of Fermacell expanded its European fibre-gypsum and cement-bonded-board businesses. In 2025, it completed the acquisition of AZEK, extending its operations into exterior home and outdoor-living products.[43][45][46][47] [42][43][44][45][46][47]
