Overview

Intuitive Surgical, Inc. develops and commercializes technology for minimally invasive care, centered on robotic-assisted systems used in surgery and endoluminal procedures. Its core platforms are the da Vinci surgical system and the Ion endoluminal system, supported by instruments and accessories, customer learning, support services, and digital capabilities. The company says its mission is based on the belief that minimally invasive care is life-enhancing and that its technology is intended to expand the potential of physicians; it also frames its long-term objective around improving patient outcomes, patient and care-team experience, cost of care, and access to high-quality minimally invasive care.[1]+3

Products & services

Intuitive Surgical’s products are centered on the da Vinci robotic surgery platform, which currently includes the da Vinci 5, da Vinci Xi, da Vinci X, and single-port da Vinci SP systems; all da Vinci systems include a surgeon’s console, imaging electronics, a patient-side cart, and computational hardware and software.[9] At the console, the system translates the surgeon’s hand movements into precise real-time micro-movements of the instruments, and includes motion scaling and tremor filtration; for example, a three-millimeter hand movement can be scaled to a one-millimeter instrument movement in the patient.[10][11] The 3DHD vision system uses a 3DHD endoscope with two independent vision channels linked to two separate color monitors and includes digital zoom.[12] On da Vinci 5, X, Xi, and Si, the patient-side cart can position up to four arms, while da Vinci SP uses a single arm with three multi-jointed, wristed instruments and a fully wristed 3DHD camera passed through a single cannula.[13]

The company offers approximately 70 multi-port da Vinci instruments, plus advanced energy and stapling tools for the da Vinci 5, X, and Xi platforms; it also offers a unique set of force-feedback instruments only for da Vinci 5 and nine core instruments for da Vinci SP.[14] Stapling products include the wristed SureForm and EndoWrist staplers for resection, transection, and anastomosis creation; SureForm 30, 45, and 60 are single-use instruments for general, thoracic, gynecologic, urologic, and pediatric procedures, and the company also has stapler reloads in 2.0 mm, 2.5 mm, 3.5 mm, 4.3 mm, and 4.6 mm sizes.[15] Energy products include the E-200 generator, which provides high-frequency energy for cutting, coagulation, and vessel sealing and is integrated with da Vinci 5 while remaining compatible with da Vinci X and Xi; Vessel Sealer Extend is a single-use, fully wristed bipolar instrument for vessels up to 7 mm in diameter, and SynchroSeal enables one-step sealing and transection with a single pedal press.[16]+2

Outside core surgery, Intuitive sells the Ion endoluminal system, a flexible robotic-assisted catheter-based platform for minimally invasive lung biopsies.[19] Ion’s ultra-thin catheter can articulate 180 degrees in all directions to navigate far into the peripheral lung and provide stability for biopsy precision, and the system’s instruments include a fully articulating catheter, a peripheral vision probe that provides real-time airway visualization for navigation, and Flexision biopsy needles for obtaining tissue from lung nodules.[19]+2 Service offerings include installation, repair, maintenance, 24/7 technical support, proactive system health monitoring, service care plans, OnSite monitoring, software upgrades and updates, a customer portal, structured training pathways, and the cloud-enabled SimNow simulation platform with physics-based virtual training and quantitative performance assessment.[5]+3 Intuitive reports product revenue from systems, system components, and instruments and accessories, plus separate service revenue; instruments and accessories revenue was $5.08 billion in 2024, and recurring revenue from instruments and accessories, service, and operating leases was $7.04 billion, or 84% of total revenue.[25]+2 [9]+19

Geographic presence

Intuitive Surgical’s revenue is reported geographically as the United States and outside the United States (OUS). In 2024, the U.S. generated $5.59 billion of revenue and OUS generated $2.76 billion, representing roughly 67% and 33% of total revenue, respectively; the same U.S.-weighted mix was also reported in 2022 and 2023. The company does not provide a more granular revenue split for Europe, Asia, or other international regions in this disclosure.[28]+2

In installed-system activity, 2024 da Vinci placements were reported as 800 in the U.S., 309 in Europe, 321 in Asia, and 96 in other OUS markets, indicating broad geographic demand beyond its domestic base.[7][39] [28]+13

Intuitive Surgical officially reports a single operating and reportable segment; it does not disclose multiple business segments for financial reporting purposes. The chief operating decision maker is the CEO, who evaluates the business on a consolidated basis using measures including income from operations and net income. As a result, the company’s only official segment is the enterprise as a whole, representing 100% of revenue and earnings for segment-reporting purposes.[40][41]

Although there is only one reportable segment, Intuitive Surgical disaggregates revenue into three main business lines that indicate its functional focus areas: Instruments and accessories, Systems, and Services. In 2024, Instruments and accessories contributed about 60.8% of revenue ($5.079 billion), reflecting recurring sales tied to procedures; Systems contributed about 23.5% ($1.966 billion), representing da Vinci and Ion system sales and related lease-type activity; and Services contributed about 15.6% ($1.307 billion), representing support, maintenance, and related service revenue.[30]+3

The company also provides a geographic revenue view rather than geographic segments. In 2024, about 66.9% of revenue came from the United States ($5.589 billion) and 33.1% from outside the United States ($2.763 billion). Company history

Intuitive Surgical was founded in 1995. It launched its first da Vinci surgical system in 1999, and in 2000 the FDA cleared da Vinci for general laparoscopic surgery. The company also completed its initial public offering in 2000.[45]+2

A major corporate milestone came in 2003, when Intuitive Surgical closed its merger with Computer Motion. The da Vinci platform was then expanded through successive system generations, including the da Vinci S in 2006, da Vinci Si in 2009, da Vinci Xi in 2014, da Vinci X in 2017, and da Vinci SP in 2018. In late 2009, the company announced that Gary Guthart would become chief executive officer effective January 1, 2010.[48]+2 [45]+5
