INTERCONTINENTAL HOTELS GROUP PLC /NEW/

Overview

InterContinental Hotels Group PLC (IHG) is a global hospitality company that operates a portfolio of 20 hotel brands and the IHG One Rewards loyalty programme. Its business is predominantly asset-light: IHG franchises its brands and manages hotels on behalf of third-party owners, rather than owning most of the properties in its system. Its stated purpose is “True Hospitality for Good.” [1][2]

IHG’s hotels span more than 100 countries, with operations organised across the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Africa, and Greater China. At the end of 2025, its system comprised 6,963 hotels and more than one million open rooms. Total revenue for 2025 was $5.19 billion.[3] [1]

Products & services

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) offers hotel stays across a range of brands and formats. Six Senses combines accommodation with wellness programmes and sensory-led design; InterContinental offers luxury stays and curated local experiences; and Ruby comprises design-led urban lifestyle hotels. Other brands include Regent, Kimpton, Hotel Indigo, voco, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, avid and Garner. Staybridge Suites, Candlewood Suites and Atwell Suites extend the portfolio into suite-based and longer-stay accommodation.[14]

For hotel owners, IHG licenses its brands through franchise agreements and manages hotels on behalf of third-party owners. Its shared services include marketing, reservations, certain hotel services and IHG One Rewards, funded in part through hotel-owner assessments. Guests can earn loyalty points on qualifying stays and through partner programmes. At year-end 2024, approximately 73% of rooms in IHG’s system were franchised and 27% were managed; owned, leased and managed-lease rooms accounted for less than 1%.[17] [14]

Geographic presence

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has branded hotels in more than 100 countries and reports its hotel operations across three regions: the Americas; Europe, Middle East, Asia and Africa (EMEAA); and Greater China. At the end of 2024, the Americas had 4,491 hotels and 527,994 rooms, EMEAA had 1,349 hotels and 266,474 rooms, and Greater China had 789 hotels and 192,657 rooms. IHG identifies the United States as a key profit-generating market within the Americas.[21]

In 2024, reported revenue was $1,141 million in the Americas, $748 million in EMEAA and $161 million in Greater China. A further $262 million was reported under Central, which includes revenue such as technology fees, insurance and co-brand licensing rather than a separate geographic region. IHG’s registered office is in Windsor, United Kingdom.[26] [21]

Business segments

IHG reports four segments: Americas, EMEAA (Europe, Middle East, Asia and Africa, excluding Greater China), Greater China, and Central. The first three are geographic businesses; Central covers group-wide activities, principally technology fees, co-brand licensing fees, certain IHG One Rewards revenue and insurance activities. IHG predominantly franchises its brands or manages hotels for third-party owners, although the regional segments also include revenue from owned and leased hotels.[29][1]

In 2025, the Americas generated $1,129 million, or approximately 46% of revenue from reportable segments. It is centred on the US and also includes markets in Latin America, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean; most of its rooms operate under a franchise model. EMEAA generated $811 million (33%), with revenue largely from the UK, Middle East, Asia and gateway cities in continental Europe. Greater China generated $165 million (7%) and has historically been predominantly a managed-hotel market, with franchising becoming more significant. Central generated $363 million (15%). These percentages exclude System Fund and reimbursable revenue, which IHG reports separately from revenue from its reportable segments.[30] [29]

Company history

The roots of InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) include the InterContinental brand, founded in 1946, and Holiday Inn, whose first hotel was opened by Kemmons Wilson in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1952.[34] Bass acquired Holiday Inn International in 1988 and the remainder of the Holiday Inn brand in 1990, then acquired InterContinental in 1998.[35]

IHG became a separately listed company on 15 April 2003, when Six Continents separated its hotels and soft-drinks businesses from Mitchells & Butlers. Six Continents also acquired Candlewood Suites in 2003.[36][35] IHG disposed of its interest in the soft-drinks business in 2005.[37] It subsequently expanded its hotel portfolio through the acquisition of Kimpton in 2015, a controlling interest in Regent in 2018, and Six Senses in 2019.[38] [34]
