INFICON

Updated

Overview

INFICON is a Swiss-based instrumentation and technology company serving semiconductor, industrial, and other high-tech markets. Its products include vacuum measurement and control equipment, leak detectors, gas-analysis instruments, sensors, and Smart Manufacturing software.[1][2] The company describes its products and software as supporting productivity and quality.[3]

Headquartered in Bad Ragaz, Switzerland, INFICON serves customers through production sites and a global sales, application-engineering, and service network spanning the Americas, Europe, and Asia.[4][5] In FY2025, it reported net sales of USD 673.7 million and 1,731 employees.[6][7] [1]

Products & services

INFICON’s product portfolio includes leak-detection and vacuum-measurement equipment, process-monitoring systems, and analytical instruments. SMART-Spray is a wireless helium spray gun for leak detection, while the LDS3000 with EcoBoost is a helium leak detector designed to reduce helium consumption by up to 90%. Transpector CPX is a compact residual-gas analyzer for semiconductor process monitoring, and FabTime software provides real-time manufacturing insights. For battery production, ELT Vmax detects electrolyte leaks in inline cell testing; an electrolyte-sniffer system works with it to test battery modules and packs. Other named products include the HAPSITE 4 CDT chemical-identification system and Trigon vacuum gauge.[8][9]

INFICON’s vacuum gauges and controllers cover measurement from ultra-high vacuum to atmospheric pressure, using Pirani, capacitance-diaphragm, and hot- or cold-ionization technologies, available as standalone or combined sensors. Its portfolio also includes customized sensors for solar-cell production and leak-testing applications for automotive components, lithium-ion batteries, battery stacks, and fuel cells.[1]

Services include consulting and training, installation, commissioning, calibration, maintenance, repair, and equipment rental. INFICON reports a global sales and service organization of about 400 people, including more than 150 application engineers.[11]

For FY2025, INFICON reported sales of USD 673.7 million. By end market, Semi & Vacuum Coating accounted for USD 330.0 million (49.0% of sales), General Vacuum USD 174.8 million (25.9%), Refrigeration, Air Conditioning & Automotive USD 137.1 million (20.3%), and Security & Energy USD 31.8 million (4.7%). These are end-market shares, not revenue percentages for individual products.[12] [8]

Geographic presence

INFICON reports 2025 sales across Asia-Pacific, China, Europe, North America and Other. Sales were USD 168.6 million in Asia-Pacific (25.0% of total), USD 190.7 million in China (28.3%), USD 153.2 million in Europe (22.7%), USD 156.4 million in North America (23.2%) and USD 4.8 million in Other (0.7%); total sales were USD 673.7 million. China is presented as a separate sales region from Asia-Pacific.[15] The company reported that Asia-Pacific sales increased 19.2% in 2025, while Europe and America sales declined 3.0% and 12.4%, respectively.[16]

The reported regional employee distribution was 609 in North America, 776 in Europe, 191 in Asia-Pacific and 155 in China.[17] INFICON says its production spans Europe, China, Asia-Pacific and North America, and identifies manufacturing facilities in Germany, Liechtenstein, the United States, Malaysia and China. Its Malaysia production site became fully operational in 2025.[4][18]

The locations covered by the report’s 2025 site data include Mariehamn, Finland; Balzers, Liechtenstein; Cologne, Germany; Linköping, Sweden; Shanghai, China; Syracuse, Overland Park and Longmont in the United States; and Shah Alam, Malaysia.[19] INFICON lists its parent company in Bad Ragaz, Switzerland, and subsidiaries in 18 countries, including locations across Europe, Asia, North America and Mexico.[20][18] Its other named sales, service and office locations include sites in the United States and Mexico, several European cities, Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan and China.[5] [15]

Business segments

INFICON reports one global operating segment; it manages and evaluates performance for the Group as a whole. Its four end-market categories are revenue disclosures, not separate operating segments.[22][23]

In FY2025, Semi & Vacuum Coating generated $330.0 million, approximately 49.0% of sales, serving semiconductor and thin-film coating applications with instruments, sensors, process-control and software solutions.[13][24] General Vacuum contributed $174.8 million (25.9%), supplying vacuum analysis, control and measurement instruments to areas including solar, life sciences, food packaging, research and analytics.[13][25] Automotive, Refrigeration & Air Conditioning generated $137.1 million (20.3%); its applications include leak detection and quality control for cooling systems and automotive components, as well as batteries and fuel cells.[14][10] Security & Energy contributed $31.8 million (4.7%), providing gas and volatile-organic-compound detection and analysis for identifying hazardous substances.[14][26] Shares are approximate and rounded; FY2025 total sales were $673.7 million.[6] [22]

Company history

INFICON traces its technical roots to Balzers and dates the INFICON name to 1969, when scientists and engineers in Syracuse, New York, developed a solid-state halogen leak detector. Its early milestones included development of a digitally controlled quadrupole mass spectrometer in the 1970s and launch of its first thin-film product in 1979.[27][28]

The instrumentation businesses that later formed INFICON were merged under OC Oerlikon in 1996; the combined company was formed in 2000 from Balzers Instruments, Leybold’s instrumentation business, and Leybold Inficon (USA), and adopted the INFICON name on July 1.[29][30] INFICON held its IPO in November 2000 and listed shares on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq; it delisted from Nasdaq in 2005.[31] Subsequent acquisitions broadened its instrumentation and software portfolio: Sentex Systems in 2003, Maxtek assets in 2007, Adixen Scandinavia in 2011, Final Phase Systems in 2018, and FabTime assets in 2024.[32] [29]
