Updated

Overview

Industrial Bank Co., Ltd. is a Chinese bank founded in 1988 in Fuzhou, Fujian Province, and listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange since 2007. It provides corporate and retail banking services and operates a broader financial-services group spanning wealth management, investment banking, asset management, trust, funds, financial leasing and consumer finance. Green finance is a strategic focus.[1]

The bank operates nationally and has a Hong Kong branch. At the end of 2024, it reported 2,101 outlets, 63,189 employees and approximately RMB10.51 trillion in total assets; its 2024 operating income was RMB212.226 billion. Its stated mission is “sincere service and common growth.” [1] [1]

Products & services

Industrial Bank offers retail deposits, mortgages, personal business and consumer loans, credit cards, and wealth-management services. Its retail services also include fund and insurance distribution, mobile banking, and private banking.[8] For corporate customers, it provides accounts, payments and payroll services, lending, bond underwriting, syndicated loans and mergers-and-acquisitions financing.[11]

Its cash-management services include global fund management through direct bank connections and a “CIPS + Treasury” model. Cross-border offerings include online settlement, foreign exchange, financing, import letters of credit and an e-commerce service solution that combines settlement, foreign exchange and wealth management. Its international online platform uses big data, blockchain and optical character recognition to support these services.[14][15] Through its Bank-to-Bank Platform, Industrial Bank supplies other financial institutions with fund transactions, wealth-management distribution, FICC services, cross-border finance, payments and settlement.[16][17]

The bank’s green-finance offerings include green loans and supply-chain finance, leasing, trusts, funds, and green or ESG wealth-management products; it also describes carbon-reduction-linked and sustainability-linked loans.[18][19] [8]

Geographic presence

Industrial Bank is headquartered in Fuzhou, Fujian Province, and operates a branch network across China, including in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong, Zhejiang and Jiangsu. Its regional reporting also groups branches in northeastern and other areas, western China, and central China. The northeastern and other regions segment includes its Hong Kong branch.[20]

In 2024, the bank reported RMB 212.2 billion in operating income. Of this, RMB 30.2 billion was attributed to Fujian, RMB 19.9 billion to northeastern and other regions, RMB 19.4 billion to central China, and RMB 15.0 billion to western China. A further RMB 79.6 billion was attributed to the head office rather than a geographic region. The bank listed 2,101 outlets and 63,189 employees in total; its Hong Kong branch accounted for one outlet and 333 employees.[25][4] [20]

Business segments

Industrial Bank describes its activities through corporate banking, retail banking, interbank finance and financial-markets businesses, but its reported financial segments are regional rather than business-line segments. Corporate banking focuses on financing for businesses, including technology, green and inclusive finance and supply-chain services. Retail banking covers personal lending, wealth management and private banking. Interbank finance provides services such as settlement, custody and trading, while financial-markets activities include bond investment, market-making and other fixed-income, currency and commodities products. The bank does not report operating-income shares for these business lines.[9]

In its 2024 regional segment breakdown, the head office contributed approximately 37.5% of operating income and Fujian 14.3%. The remaining reported segments were Northeast and other regions (9.4%), Central (9.1%), Western (7.1%), Jiangsu (5.4%), Zhejiang (5.3%), Guangdong (5.0%), Shanghai (3.6%) and Beijing (3.4%). These percentages are calculated from reported segment operating income and should not be interpreted as shares by banking product or customer type.[29][21] [9]

Company history

Industrial Bank traces its origins to Fujian Industrial Bank, approved for establishment in Fuzhou in 1988. It began trading on the Shanghai Stock Exchange on 5 February 2007, marking its transition to a publicly listed bank.[30]

The bank expanded into financial leasing with the establishment of its wholly owned subsidiary, Industrial Bank Financial Leasing, in August 2010.[31] [30][31]
