Overview

Industrial and Commercial Bank of China Limited (ICBC) is a Chinese commercial bank established in 1984. It provides corporate and personal banking, asset management and financial-market services. The bank describes serving the real economy as central to its business and states its mission as “Excellence for You.” [1]

ICBC serves more than 13 million corporate customers and 766 million personal customers. At the end of 2024, it had 408 overseas institutions in 49 countries and regions. Its consolidated operating income for 2024 was RMB786.1 billion.[7] [1]

Products & services

Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) offers personal savings products including Zhi Cun Bao and Ling Cun Bao, alongside mortgages, consumer loans and loans for business owners. Its wealth services include investment-product selection, fund sales and a T+0 fund service called Tian Tian Ying. Payment offerings include the ICBC PASS prepaid card, ICBC PAY for overseas payments, and account services under the Moneylink Account name.[10][11]

For businesses, ICBC Account Link provides online and offline account access, multi-currency transactions and centralized account management. Cloud Receipt and Cloud Reconciliation support digital accounting processes. Its lending and supply-chain offerings include Manufacturing e Loan, a digital unsecured loan for small and micro manufacturers, and ICBC Pooling, which combines collection, payment, management and financing functions across supply chains.[12]

ICBC also provides cross-border RMB settlement, trade settlement and treasury services for multinational companies, and services for cross-border e-commerce. Its digital service infrastructure includes the Zhike platform, which uses customer and product data to support customer outreach and product recommendations.[15][16] [10]

Geographic presence

Industrial and Commercial Bank of China’s operations are concentrated in the Chinese mainland. In 2024, its reported geographic operating-income breakdown attributed 90.4% to mainland regions and 9.6% to “overseas and others.” Within the mainland, the Bohai Rim and Yangtze River Delta were the largest regional contributors, at 20.8% and 19.3% of operating income, respectively. The bank also reports activity across the Pearl River Delta, Central China, Western China and Northeastern China, alongside its head office.[17]

At the end of 2024, the bank had 15,975 domestic institutions and 408 overseas institutions in 49 countries and regions. Its overseas network was supplemented by a presence in a further 20 African countries through its shareholding in Standard Bank Group. Of its 415,159 employees, 26,291 were classified under “overseas and others”; the largest mainland employee groups were in Western China and Central China.[18] [17]

Business segments

Industrial and Commercial Bank of China reports four business segments. Corporate banking serves corporations, government agencies and financial institutions through lending, deposits, trade finance and related services; it contributed approximately 50% of operating income in 2025. Personal banking serves individuals through loans, deposits, cards and wealth-management services and contributed approximately 39%. Treasury operations, including money-market, securities and foreign-exchange activities, contributed approximately 11%. The remaining segment, Others, comprises items not directly attributable to those businesses and contributed less than 1%.[22]

The bank also reports a separate geographic breakdown. In 2025, the Bohai Rim accounted for approximately 21% of operating income, the Yangtze River Delta for 19%, and Overseas and others for 10%; the balance came primarily from its other mainland China regions and head office.[27] [22]

Company history

Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) was established on 1 January 1984 as a wholly state-owned commercial bank, with authorization from China’s State Council and the People’s Bank of China. It was restructured as a joint-stock limited company on 28 October 2005 and listed on the Shanghai and Hong Kong stock exchanges on 27 October 2006.[28]

In a later international expansion milestone, ICBC completed its acquisition of a 60% stake in Standard Bank PLC on 1 February 2015. The business was renamed ICBC Standard Bank PLC.[29] [28][29]
