Company history
Founded in Chicago in 1912, Illinois Tool Works grew from a group of Rockford inventors’ machining-tool business, backed by financier Byron L. Smith. Its early development included its first acquisition, Shakeproof Screw and Nut Lock Company, in the 1920s.[100]
Over subsequent decades, ITW expanded into new products and markets: it established Fastex for plastic fasteners and components in the 1950s, introduced a self-drilling screw for construction and the Hi-Cone packaging carrier in the 1960s, and became publicly traded in the 1970s. In the 1990s, the company made roughly 100 acquisitions, including Miller Electric and Premark International, which expanded its food-equipment business.[100]
ITW marked its centennial in 2012 and introduced its Enterprise Strategy. In 2021, it completed the acquisition of MTS Test & Simulation. On January 1, 2024, Christopher A. O’Herlihy became President and CEO, succeeding E. Scott Santi.[100][101][102][103] [104][100][101][102][103]
