Company history
IES Holdings was founded in June 1997 as Integrated Electrical Services, with a strategy of consolidating electrical contractors, and completed its initial public offering in January 1998.[18][19] After financial difficulties, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in February 2006 and completed its reorganization that May.[20]
In 2015, IES expanded beyond electrical contracting by acquiring Shanahan Mechanical & Electrical. It changed its name to IES Holdings, Inc. in 2016 and continued broadening its services, including through the 2017 acquisition of NEXT Electric.[21][22][23]
From 2020 onward, acquisitions extended the business into residential plumbing and HVAC, structural-steel fabrication, engine and generator-set products, and wireless-network infrastructure.[23][24][25][26] In 2025, Matthew J. Simmes became president and CEO, with Jeffrey Gendell becoming executive chairman; in January 2026, IES acquired Gulf Island Fabrication.[27][28] [23][24][25][26][27][28][18][19][20][21][22]
