Howmet Aerospace Inc.

Updated

Overview

Howmet Aerospace Inc. is a global manufacturer of advanced engineered products for the aerospace, defense, and transportation industries. Its core businesses center on jet engine components, aerospace fastening systems, airframe structural components, and forged aluminum wheels for commercial transportation, with additional exposure to industrial gas turbines and other industrial markets. The company organizes these activities into four reportable segments: Engine Products, Fastening Systems, Engineered Structures, and Forged Wheels.[1]

Howmet describes its mission in terms of using differentiated technologies to help reduce customers’ carbon footprints through lighter, more fuel-efficient aircraft and commercial vehicles and support for sustainable power generation. Its business is defined by high-performance, mission-critical components used in commercial and defense aerospace, as well as products for commercial trucks and selected industrial applications.[4][5]

The company has a broad international footprint, with worldwide employment of approximately 25,430 people in 23 countries at the end of 2025. North America and Europe were its largest regions, generating 72% and 22% of 2025 sales, respectively, and the company reports operating activities across the U.S., Canada, Mexico, several European countries, and parts of Asia. Sales for 2025 were $8.252 billion, providing a general indication of its scale.[6] [1]

Products & services

Howmet Aerospace’s product lineup is centered on highly engineered aerospace and transportation components. In Engine Products, it makes investment castings including airfoils, seamless rolled rings, rotating parts, and structural parts for aircraft engines and industrial gas turbines; the company also lists hot section coatings, seamless rolled and contoured rings, disks, forgings, cast stick and billet, plus hot isostatic pressing and machining services as part of this offering.[10][11]

Its Fastening Systems business produces aerospace fastening systems and installation tools, with products used across commercial and military aircraft, jet engines, spacecraft, industrial gas turbines, and selected industrial markets. The aerospace range includes blind bolts, blind rivets, lockbolts, nuts, panel fasteners, pin systems, specialty products, installation tools, and thread roll/header tooling. Named products include Accu-Lok blind bolts for one-sided access composite structures with high joint preload and a large blind-side footprint, Ti-Matic blind bolts described as high-strength, vibration-resistant and lightweight, Visu-Lok blind fasteners with high shear, tensile, fatigue and self-locking capability, XPL lockbolts with more than twice the grip range of other fasteners, Mark IV structural panel fasteners using FlatBeam locknuts for vibration resistance, and Eddie-Bolt 2, Aero-Lite, Veri-Lite, and Hi-Lok pin systems for structural aerospace fastening.[12]

In Engineered Structures, Howmet makes titanium ingots and mill products, titanium forgings, extrusions, and forming/machining services for airframe, wing, aero-engine, and landing gear components, along with aluminum forgings, nickel forgings, and aluminum machined components and assemblies. Its structure systems offering also includes structural parts such as seat tracks, door frames, pylons, wing ribs, body chords, bulkheads, and structural or electromechanical assemblies. In Forged Wheels, it supplies forged aluminum wheels and related products for heavy-duty trucks and commercial transportation; the line includes Ultra ONE wheels made with MagnaForce alloy, which the company says provides a 17% strength increase over existing alloys and makes Ultra ONE the lightest wheel on the market. Based on reported 2024 sales, Engine Products was the largest product group at $3.7 billion, or roughly half of company revenue, followed by Fastening Systems at $1.6 billion, with Engineered Structures and Forged Wheels each at about $1.1 billion, versus total company revenue of $7.4 billion.[20] [10]

Geographic presence

Howmet Aerospace’s footprint spans at least 13 countries across North America, Europe, Asia, and North Africa: the United States, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Morocco, Mexico, Japan, Hungary, Germany, France, Czech Republic, China, Canada, and Australia [9]. Public site listings indicate a mix of manufacturing sites and regional offices, including the corporate headquarters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; a corporate office in Waalwijk, Netherlands; and an APAC office in Hong Kong, alongside operating sites such as Georgetown and Laval in Canada, Suzhou in China, Tamworth in the UK, Savannah/Midway in Georgia, and Melbourne in Australia [30].

Sales are geographically diversified but remain centered on the United States. Based on destination of sale, 2024 revenue was $7.43 billion, with $3.713 billion from the United States, about 50.0% of total sales; France contributed $678 million (9.1%), Germany $458 million (6.2%), Japan $355 million (4.8%), the United Kingdom $350 million (4.7%), Italy $287 million (3.9%), Mexico $220 million (3.0%), Canada $174 million (2.3%), Poland $152 million (2.0%), China $103 million (1.4%), and other markets $940 million (12.7%) [34][35]. Howmet’s operating asset base is also concentrated in the United States: long-lived tangible assets there were $1.864 billion out of $2.541 billion total in 2024, or roughly 73%, with additional concentrations in Hungary ($199 million), the United Kingdom ($121 million), France ($112 million), Mexico ($68 million), Germany ($54 million), Japan ($29 million), and other countries ($94 million) [36][37]. Business segments

Howmet Aerospace officially reports four product-based segments on a worldwide basis: Engine Products, Fastening Systems, Engineered Structures, and Forged Wheels.[38] Engine Products produces components for aircraft engines and industrial gas turbines, including airfoils, seamless rolled rings, rotating parts, and structural parts, and serves commercial and defense aerospace as well as industrial gas turbine and oil and gas markets.[39] Fastening Systems makes aerospace and industrial fastening systems, commercial transportation fasteners, and installation tools, with products used across aircraft, jet engines, industrial gas turbines, commercial vehicles, and certain industrial applications.[40] Engineered Structures produces titanium ingots and mill products and is vertically integrated into titanium forgings, extrusions, forming, machining, and other aerospace and defense structural components.[41] Forged Wheels manufactures forged aluminum wheels and related products for the global commercial transportation market.[42]

Using FY2024 third-party sales disclosed in the annual report, Engine Products contributed about 50% of revenue ($3.735 billion of $7.430 billion), Fastening Systems about 21% ($1.576 billion), Engineered Structures about 14% ($1.065 billion), and Forged Wheels about 14% ($1.054 billion).[4] This indicates a segment mix led by Engine Products at roughly half of company sales, with Fastening Systems as the second-largest segment and Engineered Structures and Forged Wheels as similarly sized mid-teens contributors.[4] [38]

Company history

Howmet Aerospace traces its corporate lineage to Alcoa Inc., which the company describes as having been formed in 1888; in later filings, Howmet says it was previously named Arconic Inc. and, before that, Alcoa Inc.[43]

A major turning point came on November 1, 2016, when Alcoa Inc. separated into two independent public companies: Arconic Inc. and Alcoa Corporation. In that transaction, the predecessor to Howmet retained the engineered products, global rolled products, and transportation and construction solutions businesses, while Alcoa Corporation took the alumina and primary metals operations and certain other assets.[44]

The company took its present form on April 1, 2020, when Arconic Inc. separated into two independent public companies: Howmet Aerospace Inc., which became the new name for Arconic Inc., and Arconic Corporation. Following that separation, Howmet retained the engine products, fastening systems, engineered structures, and forged wheels businesses, and launched as a standalone public company trading under the ticker HWM.[45][46] [43]
