Honda Motor Co., Ltd. is a Japanese mobility company whose core businesses are motorcycles and automobiles. It also provides financing and leasing for customers and dealers, and makes power products such as engines, generators and lawn equipment. Its business is organized into Motorcycle, Automobile, Financial Services, and Power Products and Other Businesses segments, with customers across Japan, North America, Europe, Asia and other regions.[1]

Honda’s stated mission is to supply high-quality products at reasonable prices for the satisfaction of customers worldwide. Its philosophy emphasizes “Respect for the Individual” and “The Three Joys” of buying, selling and creating.[5][6] For the fiscal year ended March 31, 2025, Honda reported approximately ¥21.69 trillion in consolidated revenue and 194,173 full-time employees.[7][8] [1]

Products & services

Honda’s automobile products include passenger cars such as the Accord, Civic and Fit; SUVs and other light trucks such as the CR-V, HR-V and Pilot; and the N-BOX mini vehicle.[9] Its vehicle range spans gasoline, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, battery-electric and fuel-cell powertrains, as well as flexible-fuel vehicles in certain markets.[12]

Honda makes sports, business and commuter motorcycles, with combustion engines across the 50cc–1,800cc classes, as well as electric models, all-terrain vehicles and side-by-sides.[13] Its electric commuter models include the CUV e:, which uses two swappable Honda Mobile Power Pack e: batteries, and the ICON e:, which has a fixed battery and a stated range of more than 50 km per charge.[14]

Other products include general-purpose engines, generators, lawn mowers, water pumps, brush cutters and tillers.[3] Honda also produces the HondaJet Elite II, a twin-turbine light aircraft with an FAA-certified autothrottle system.[15] Its financial services include customer loans and leases and financing for dealers.[16][17] In the fiscal year ended March 2025, automobiles accounted for approximately 65% of consolidated sales, motorcycles 17%, financial services 16%, and power products and other businesses 2%; these are rounded shares calculated from reported segment sales.[4] [9]

Geographic presence

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. is headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, and has principal manufacturing facilities in Japan, North America, Asia and South America. Examples include automobile plants in Yorii and Suzuka, Japan, and Marysville, Ohio; motorcycle production in Gurugram, India, and Manaus, Brazil; and aircraft production in Greensboro, North Carolina.[18][19]

For the fiscal year ended March 2025, Honda reported geographic sales revenue of ¥13.11 trillion in North America, ¥5.58 trillion in Japan, ¥4.90 trillion in Asia, ¥1.23 trillion in Other Regions and ¥0.95 trillion in Europe. These figures are based on the locations of Honda and its subsidiaries, rather than customers, and total ¥25.76 trillion before ¥4.07 trillion of reconciling items; they should not be read as shares of consolidated revenue. By unit sales, approximately 85% of Honda’s motorcycles were sold in Asia, while automobile sales were concentrated in North America, Asia and Japan.[20] [19]

Business segments

Honda reports four business segments. Motorcycle Business develops, manufactures and sells motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles and side-by-sides, along with related parts. Automobile Business covers automobiles and related parts. Financial Services Business provides financing, including retail loans and leases related to Honda products. Power Products and Other Businesses covers power products, related parts and other activities.[16]

For the fiscal year ended March 31, 2025, Automobile Business accounted for approximately 65% of consolidated sales revenue, Motorcycle Business 17%, Financial Services Business 16%, and Power Products and Other Businesses 2%. These percentages are based on sales to external customers.[23] [16][23]

Company history

Soichiro Honda established Honda Motor Co., Ltd. in 1948, and Takeo Fujisawa joined the company the following year. Honda introduced its Dream D-Type motorcycle in 1949 and the Super Cub in 1958. It established American Honda Motor Co. in 1959, marking an important step in its international expansion.[24]

Honda entered automobile production in 1963 with the T360 mini-truck and S500 sports car. The Civic, launched in 1972, and the Accord, launched in 1976, became defining models in its automotive expansion. Honda began manufacturing automobiles in the United States in 1982 and introduced its Acura luxury-vehicle brand there in 1986.[24] [24]
