HNI CORP

Updated

Overview

HNI Corporation designs and manufactures workplace furnishings and residential building products. Its two businesses are Workplace Furnishings—which includes furniture and related workplace products—and Residential Building Products, including fireplaces, stoves and related hearth products. The company describes its purpose as “Improving where people live, work, and gather.” [1]

HNI serves customers globally through operations and facilities primarily in North America, Asia and Europe; its workplace business serves markets including Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific, while its hearth-products business is focused on North America.[5][6] For fiscal 2025, ended January 3, 2026, HNI reported net sales of $2.839 billion.[7] As of that date, it had approximately 19,500 employees, including temporary workers, and was incorporated in 1944.[8][6] [1]

Products & services

HNI’s Workplace Furnishings products include panel-based and freestanding office systems, seating, benching, tables, architectural products, storage, ancillary and hospitality furniture, and products for collaborative and social spaces. Its listed brands include Allsteel, AMQ, HON, HBF, Kimball, National, Steelcase, Coalesse, Designtex, Gunlocke, Orangebox, and Smith System.[9] As a specific example, HON’s Ignition 2.0 Mid-Back Task Chair features a mesh back, synchro-tilt, adjustable arms and lumbar support, and a 300-pound capacity.[22]

Residential Building Products include prefabricated fireplaces, hearth stoves, inserts, facings, outdoor fire pits and fire tables, and accessories. The portfolio covers gas, wood, electric, and pellet-fueled products, including direct-vent fireplaces that exhaust through a roof or exterior wall. Brands named by HNI include Heat & Glo, Heatilator, Majestic, Monessen, SimpliFire, Stellar, Forge & Flame, Harman, PelPro, Quadra-Fire, and Vermont Castings.[23][24]

Services include custom furniture layouts prepared through office-furniture dealers; contract-channel support for new offices, relocations, and redesigns; and product customization to client, architect, or designer preferences. HNI also describes partnerships involving resale or marketing of partner products, fee-based services, delivery, and co-development or co-marketing. Hearth & Home Technologies sells through dealers, distributors, and company-owned installing distribution and retail outlets under the Fireside Hearth & Home brand.[25] The reviewed filings report performance by business segment, not by individual product; they do not provide a product-level revenue mix.[28] [9]

Geographic presence

HNI’s pre-acquisition business operated across North America, Asia and Europe, with offices, manufacturing plants, distribution centers and sales showrooms. Its products were marketed predominantly in the United States and Canada, with limited exports outside North America, principally to the Caribbean, Latin America and Mexico. HNI sold its India business in April 2025.[6]

Following its December 2025 acquisition of Steelcase, HNI’s wider footprint includes North America, EMEA and APAC. Steelcase’s reported country list includes the United States, Canada, Mexico, France, Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom, Czech Republic, Romania, the UAE, China, India, Malaysia, Australia, Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong.[31][32] HNI lists its headquarters in Muscatine, Iowa; Gunlocke is based in Wayland, New York, and Steelcase’s principal office is in Grand Rapids, Michigan.[33][31]

HNI’s FY2025 filing reports revenue by business segment rather than by geographic region, so it does not provide a geographic revenue mix.[34] As of January 3, 2026, HNI reported approximately 19,500 employees, including temporary personnel, but no regional distribution is provided.[35] [6]

Business segments

HNI reports two operating segments. **Workplace Furnishings** supplies commercial office furniture, including systems, seating, storage, benching, tables, architectural and collaborative products, ancillary products, and hospitality products; Steelcase is included in this segment. **Residential Building Products** focuses on gas-, wood-, electric-, and pellet-fueled fireplaces, inserts, stoves, facings, outdoor fire products, and accessories.[36][37]

For FY2025, Workplace Furnishings generated $2,164.1 million, approximately **76.2%** of consolidated net sales; Residential Building Products generated $674.9 million, approximately **23.8%**.[38] In the six months ended July 4, 2026, the respective shares were approximately **89.0%** and **11.0%**; that interim mix includes Steelcase in Workplace Furnishings and is not directly comparable to a full-year split.[28] The latest filings reviewed continue to identify these two reportable segments.[39][10] [36]

Company history

HNI traces its origins to a 1943 conversation among C. Maxwell Stanley, Clement Hanson, and H. Wood Miller; the three founded Home-O-Nize in Muscatine, Iowa, in 1947. The company established its H-O-N Division in 1951 and entered the fireplace business in 1981, expanding beyond workplace furnishings into residential products.[40]

HON Industries changed its name to HNI Corporation effective May 5, 2004. Jeffrey D. Lorenger became president and CEO in 2018 and chairman in 2020.[43][44]

HNI completed its acquisition of Kimball International on June 1, 2023, broadening its workplace-furnishings business. In 2025, HNI agreed to acquire Steelcase and completed the acquisition on December 10, making Steelcase a wholly owned subsidiary.[45] [44]
