Company profile

Himax Technologies, Inc.

Updated

Overview

Himax Technologies, Inc. is a fabless semiconductor company focused on display-imaging processing technologies. It designs display-driver ICs and timing controllers for consumer, automotive and industrial displays, alongside products such as low-power WiseEye AI sensing solutions, CMOS image sensors, wafer-level optics and LCoS microdisplays. The company describes itself as dedicated to display imaging processing technologies.[1][2]

Headquartered in Tainan, Taiwan, Himax serves international customers through offices and sales and technical-support teams in Taiwan, China, South Korea and the United States. China was its largest reported geographic revenue source in FY2025. Revenue for the year ended December 31, 2025 was approximately $832 million.[3] The predecessor operating company was incorporated in 2001.[7] An external company-data source reports approximately 2,200 employees at December 31, 2025.[8] [1]

Products & services

Himax’s display products include driver ICs and timing controllers for TFT-LCD, OLED and e-paper displays. Its portfolio also includes gate and source drivers, and touch-and-display integration (TDDI), which combines display driving with in-cell touch and may integrate timing-controller functions. Products serve applications including televisions, monitors, computers, mobile devices, automotive displays and industrial screens. Smartphone and tablet TDDI products integrate source and gate drivers, power management, timing control, memory, touch conversion and a microcontroller; disclosed capabilities include refresh rates up to 144 Hz, MIPI and VESA DSC support, up to 16 million colors and active-stylus support. OLED products include FHD+ smartphone driver ICs supporting up to 144 Hz and 10-bit color, as well as tablet TCON/source-driver ICs supporting resolutions up to 3.2K × 2K, 144 Hz and variable refresh rate.

Automotive display products include conventional display-driver ICs, TDDI, local-dimming TCONs, LTDI and OLED touch controllers. LTDI integrates large-display driving and in-cell touch for panoramic, curved and free-form cockpit displays. Himax describes its automotive OLED on-cell touch controllers as supporting touch signal-to-noise ratios above 45 dB and operation with gloves or wet fingers. Its WiseEye low-power AI sensing solutions combine an always-on CMOS image sensor, an edge-AI processor and computer-vision algorithms; offerings include complete solutions, discrete components and modules for uses such as occupancy detection, motion classification, surveillance and access control.

Other products include LCoS microdisplays for applications such as augmented-reality glasses, heads-up displays and pico-projectors, and wafer-level optics and 3D-sensing components. Its SLiM structured-light system is specified to project more than 33,000 dots, deliver less than 0.5% depth error at 30–100 cm, consume under 400 mW across the projector, sensor and decoder, and meet IEC 60825 Class 1 eye-safety requirements. Himax also provides ASIC development services using its video- and image-processing technologies, including video-interface IP, embedded processors and algorithms, and customized OLED ASIC development.

For FY2025, display-driver ICs accounted for approximately 80.0% of consolidated revenue: large-panel drivers represented 10.9% and small/medium-panel drivers 69.1%; non-driver products represented 20.0%. [9]

Geographic presence

Himax Technologies’ FY2025 revenue was concentrated in China, which accounted for $613.8 million (73.8%) of total revenue. Other reported customer regions were Taiwan, $122.5 million (14.7%); Korea, $49.6 million (6.0%); America, $21.3 million (2.6%); Japan, $15.0 million (1.8%); Mexico, $4.8 million (0.6%); and Others, $5.1 million (0.6%). The report’s “America” category is not specified as U.S.-only.[5]

The company’s principal executive office is in Tainan, Taiwan, and it also lists offices in Hsinchu and Taipei. Its other listed locations include multiple cities in mainland China, offices in South Korea and Japan, and U.S. locations including Irvine, San Jose, Minneapolis and Detroit. Himax describes its semiconductor operations as primarily fabless, while locating certain LCoS, wafer-level optics and related manufacturing facilities in Tainan. The FY2025 information located does not provide an employee breakdown by geography.[3] [5]

Business segments

Himax Technologies reports two operating segments: **Driver IC** and **Non-driver Products**. Driver IC covers display-driver integrated circuits for large-size displays, including TVs and desktop monitors, and small- and medium-size displays, including mobile handsets and consumer electronics. Non-driver Products includes timing controllers, 3D sensing solutions, liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS), CMOS image sensors and wafer-level optics.[22]

For FY2025, Driver IC generated $665.8 million, approximately **80%** of revenue, while Non-driver Products generated $166.4 million, approximately **20%**, out of $832.2 million total revenue.[23] A more detailed product breakdown attributes about **10.9%** of revenue to large-display drivers, **69.1%** to small- and medium-display drivers, and **20.0%** to non-driver products.[19] These product categories elaborate on the two reported segments; they are not additional reportable segments.[24] [22]

Company history

Himax’s predecessor, Himax Taiwan, was incorporated on June 12, 2001, with B.S. Wu identified in company materials as its founder. Himax Technologies Limited was established in the Cayman Islands in April 2005 and became the holding company for Himax Taiwan through a share exchange in October of that year. In March 2006, Himax completed its Nasdaq IPO, raising $147 million.[7]

The company acquired Wisepal Technologies in 2006. In 2007, it established Himax Imaging, and its 2008 annual report described CMOS image sensors as a new product line beyond its display-driver business. Later product milestones included the production ramp of OLED driver and timing-controller products for flagship electric vehicles and tablets in 2022.[27] [7]
