Overview
Herc Holdings Inc. is a North American equipment-rental company serving construction and industrial customers. Its core business is renting equipment, complemented by sales of used equipment and contractor supplies, as well as maintenance, repair, transportation, on-site support and related services. The company describes its customer focus as helping them work more efficiently, effectively and safely.[1]
Herc operates in the United States and Canada. As of June 30, 2026, it reported 607 locations and approximately 10,000 employees; it traces its equipment-rental experience back more than 60 years.[1][2] The company reported $4.376 billion in total revenue for 2025.[3] [1][2][3]

Herc offers rental equipment across categories including aerial lifts, earthmoving equipment, material-handling equipment, climate control, pumps, lighting and power. Examples in its catalog include scissor lifts, skid steers, compact track loaders, excavators and attachments, forklifts, telehandlers, conveyors, hoists, air conditioners, chillers and dehumidifiers.[4][5][6][7] Published specifications include a 14-foot narrow electric scissor lift rated for a 670-pound platform capacity and 20-foot working height; telehandler rental options span capacities of 5,500 to 26,000 pounds.[8][9]
Related offerings include used-equipment sales; contractor supplies such as tools, small equipment and safety supplies; repair and maintenance; equipment management and safety training for certain customers; re-rental and on-site support; and equipment transport, rental protection, cleaning, refueling and labor.[1] Herc also describes fleet-management and telematics, power solutions, parts and supplies sales, customized advice and transport services.[10]
For the first half of 2026, Herc reported $2,053 million in equipment-rental revenue, $248 million from rental-equipment sales, $25 million from new equipment, parts and supplies, and $17 million from service and other revenue. These are revenue-stream figures, not a breakdown by equipment type.[11] [1][10][11][11][11][11][4][5][6][7][8][9][4][5][6][7][8][9]
Geographic presence
Herc Holdings operates across North America. At year-end 2025, it reported 602 locations in 46 U.S. states and five Canadian provinces [12]. Its June 2025 acquisition of H&E Equipment Services added approximately 160 branches across more than 30 U.S. states [13]. The company’s latest reported footprint was 607 company-operated U.S. and Canadian branches as of June 30, 2026 [2].
Herc’s 2025 annual report does not provide a U.S.-versus-Canada or country-level revenue breakdown [14]. The company reported approximately 10,000 employees in North America in its July 2026 fact sheet, without a geographic breakdown of employees [15]. [12][13][2][14][15]
Business segments
Herc Holdings reports one operating and reportable segment: equipment rental. It does not report separate segments for its specialty offerings or individual equipment categories. Its rental business covers a broad fleet—including aerial, earthmoving, material-handling, truck and trailer, compressor, compaction and lighting equipment—and specialty offerings such as power generation, climate control, remediation and restoration, pumps, and trench shoring. It also provides contractor tools and related services.[16][1]
The company reports revenue categories, rather than revenue splits by equipment type or specialty offering. In FY2025, equipment rental generated $3.770 billion, approximately 86.2% of total revenue; sales of rental equipment contributed $509 million (11.6%); sales of new equipment, parts and supplies $63 million (1.4%); and service and other revenue $34 million (0.8%).[17] For the first half of 2026, the corresponding amounts were $2.053 billion (87.6%), $248 million (10.6%), $25 million (1.1%) and $17 million (0.7%), respectively. These percentages use reported total revenue as the denominator and are not separate reportable-segment contributions.[18] [16][1][17][17][17][17][17][18][18][18][18][18]
Company history
Herc Holdings traces its origins to July 7, 1965, when Hertz Equipment Rental Corporation was formed as a wholly owned subsidiary of The Hertz Corporation. In 2015, Lawrence “Larry” Silber was appointed president and CEO of the equipment-rental business.[19][20]
Following Hertz’s separation of its vehicle-rental business, the equipment-rental company became independent as Herc Holdings in 2016 and began trading on the New York Stock Exchange as HRI on July 1.[21][22]
Herc expanded through acquisitions, including Houston-based Champion Rentals in 2021 and Cloverdale Equipment Company in 2022. In 2025, it completed its acquisition of H&E Equipment Services, a major expansion that added about 160 branches across more than 30 U.S. states.[23][24][13][25] [21][13][19][20][22][23][24][25]
