Company profile

HECLA MINING CO/DE/

Updated

Overview

Hecla Mining Company is a precious-metals mining company focused on silver, with additional production of gold, lead and zinc. Its operations and development properties are in the United States and Canada, including Alaska, Idaho, Quebec and Yukon; it also has exploration assets in the United States, Canada and Mexico.[1][2]

Hecla states its mission is “to responsibly produce essential metals that power innovation and enrich lives.” [3] Founded in 1891 in Idaho’s Silver Valley, the company reported FY2025 sales of $1.423 billion and approximately 1,865 employees at year-end.[1] [1]

Products & services

Hecla’s products are silver, gold, lead and zinc, with copper also produced as a by-product at Greens Creek. In FY2025, reported production was 17,026,785 ounces of silver, 150,509 ounces of gold, 56,130 tons of lead and 68,558 tons of zinc; Greens Creek also produced 1,804 tons of copper.[6][7]

Products are sold in several forms rather than solely as refined metals. Greens Creek produces silver concentrate, zinc concentrate and a zinc-rich precious-metals concentrate containing gold, silver, zinc and lead; it also produces gravity concentrate that is processed by a third party into doré. Casa Berardi’s final product is doré. The company’s described processing capabilities include gravity recovery, flotation, cyanide leaching, electrowinning and doré smelting.[8] [6]

Geographic presence

Hecla’s current mine footprint spans three locations in the United States and Canada: Greens Creek in Alaska, Lucky Friday in Idaho, and Keno Hill in Yukon Territory, Canada [11]. Hecla sold Casa Berardi and its other Quebec properties in March 2026 and exited Mexico in the first half of 2026 [14][15].

For the six months ended June 30, 2026, reported sales attributed to the mines were $416.332 million at Greens Creek, $232.577 million at Lucky Friday, and $80.894 million at Keno Hill, against total sales of $745.284 million. These amounts represent approximately 55.9%, 31.2%, and 10.9% of total sales, respectively; they reflect mine attribution, not customer or sales-destination geography [16].

Hecla’s principal executive office is in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho [17]. The company also lists a Vancouver, British Columbia office [18]. [14]

Business segments

As of the six months ended June 30, 2026, Hecla Mining reported three operating segments: Greens Creek, Lucky Friday and Keno Hill. Each is an underground mine focused on silver, with associated gold, lead and zinc production; Greens Creek and Keno Hill also produce copper.[19][2] Their respective shares of consolidated sales were approximately 55.9% for Greens Creek ($416.3 million), 31.2% for Lucky Friday ($232.6 million) and 10.9% for Keno Hill ($80.9 million). These percentages use total consolidated sales of $745.3 million as the denominator.[20]

The segment structure differs from Hecla’s 2025 reporting, which included Casa Berardi as a fourth segment. Hecla sold Casa Berardi on March 25, 2026, and its results are reported as discontinued operations in 2026.[21][14] Environmental-remediation services are included in “Other,” not as a mine segment; they contributed $15.5 million, or about 2.1% of consolidated sales, in the first half of 2026.[22][20] [19]

Company history

Hecla Mining was formed on October 14, 1891, by Patsy Clark, Amasa Campbell, and John Finch to acquire and trade mining claims in Idaho’s Silver Valley.[23] The Lucky Friday mine began operating in 1942, and Hecla became its owner and operator in 1958. In 1981, a merger with Day Mines consolidated the company’s position in the Silver Valley.[12][24]

Hecla expanded beyond Idaho in 2008 by acquiring Rio Tinto’s 70.27% interest in Greens Creek, giving it full ownership of the Alaska operation.[25] In 2013, its acquisition of Aurizon Mines added the Casa Berardi gold mine in Quebec.[26] The 2018 acquisition of Klondex Mines added Nevada operations, including Fire Creek, Midas, and Hollister.[27] In September 2022, Hecla acquired Alexco Resource and its Keno Hill project in Yukon.[28] Rob Krcmarov became President and CEO in November 2024.[29] In March 2026, Hecla completed the sale of Casa Berardi’s owning subsidiary to Orezone Gold.[30] [26]
