Overview

Hartford Financial Services Group, Inc. (The Hartford) is an insurance and financial-services holding company whose businesses include property-and-casualty insurance, employee group benefits, and mutual funds and ETFs. Its five reportable segments are Business Insurance, Personal Insurance, Property & Casualty Other Operations, Employee Benefits, and Hartford Funds.[1][2] Its products serve individual and business customers, with operations primarily in the United States and also in the United Kingdom and other international locations.[1] The company states its purpose as “underwriting human achievement.” [3]

For fiscal 2025, Hartford reported $28.368 billion in consolidated revenue; a secondary source citing its 2025 Form 10-K reports 19,200 employees at year-end.[4][5] The company traces its history to 1810, when its oldest subsidiary, Hartford Fire Insurance Company, was established.[1][6] [1]

Products & services

The Hartford’s Business Insurance products include workers’ compensation, general liability, marine, package business, commercial property, professional liability, bonds, assumed reinsurance and commercial auto. Commercial property coverage can protect buildings and business property against covered perils and may include equipment-breakdown and business-interruption coverage; workers’ compensation is offered on both fixed-premium and loss-sensitive bases. Its small-business offerings include workers’ compensation, property, general liability and commercial auto, with Spectrum combining property and general liability; excess-and-surplus products include property, general liability and umbrella coverage.[7]

Employee Benefits includes group life, disability and other group coverages, offered on an employer-paid or voluntary basis. Products include renewable term life, accidental-death and severe-injury benefits, business-travel accident coverage, short- and long-term disability, paid family leave, retiree health, critical-illness, accident and hospital-indemnity coverage. Disability benefits generally replace part of an employee’s income during a qualifying work interruption, subject to policy terms such as elimination periods. Related services include leave management, disability underwriting, administration and claims processing, and administration for self-funded employer plans.[10][11]

Personal Insurance includes automobile, homeowners and personal umbrella coverage. Auto and homeowners products are marketed to AARP members under an exclusive licensing arrangement and to other customers, primarily through independent agents. The Prevail cloud platform was designed for the mature market and supports real-time digital transactions; the 2025 annual report described it as available in nearly all states.[12] In the company’s second-quarter 2026 presentation, reported revenue contribution was 59% Business Insurance, 26% Employee Benefits, 14% Personal Insurance and 1% Other.[16] [7]

Geographic presence

Hartford Financial Services Group’s operations and customer base are principally in the United States, with additional operations in the United Kingdom and other international locations. Its international activities include a Lloyd’s syndicate. Personal Insurance serves customers across the United States, while Employee Benefits distributes products through regional sales offices.[1]

The company is headquartered in Connecticut. At December 31, 2025, it owned about 1.8 million square feet of property, including its Hartford home-office complex and other properties in the greater Hartford area. It also leased office space across North America, the U.K., India, and other overseas locations, including approximately 1 million square feet in the U.S., 13,000 square feet in London, and 28,000 square feet in other international branches. Hartford reported approximately 19,200 employees worldwide but did not provide a geographic breakdown of its workforce.[1] [1]

Business segments

For 2025, Hartford reported Business Insurance, Personal Insurance, P&C Other Operations, Employee Benefits and Hartford Funds as its business lines. Their approximate shares of $28.221 billion in total segment revenues were 56.0%, 14.5%, 0.3%, 25.3% and 3.9%, respectively. These percentages are calculated from reported segment revenues; the measure includes premiums and fees as well as investment income.[23][24]

Business Insurance provides commercial property and casualty coverage, including workers’ compensation, liability, property, auto, professional liability, bonds and marine insurance.[25][8] Personal Insurance focuses on automobile and homeowners coverage for individuals.[26] P&C Other Operations comprises run-off and other non-core exposures, including legacy asbestos and environmental business.[27] Together, those three lines make up Property & Casualty, approximately 70.8% of 2025 segment revenues.[28][24]

Employee Benefits provides group life, disability and supplemental health coverages, as well as disability and leave-management services.[10][11] Hartford Funds manages mutual funds and ETFs and offers third-party life and annuity separate-account products, with revenue primarily from fees.[1] [23]

Company history

Hartford Fire Insurance Company, The Hartford’s oldest predecessor, was founded in 1810 as a fire insurer. The business broadened over time, including the formation of Hartford Accident and Indemnity Company in 1913, which extended its offerings into auto, property, accident and liability insurance.[6] In 2004, The Hartford acquired CNA’s group-benefits business, expanding its group life, accident and disability offerings.[29]

In 2012–13, the company sold several life, retirement and wealth-management businesses, including Individual Life, Retirement Plans and Woodbury Financial Services, as it reshaped its portfolio.[30] From 2017 to 2019, it expanded employee benefits by acquiring Aetna’s U.S. group life and disability business, while selling its life-and-annuity operations, then known as Talcott Resolution.[34] It also acquired specialty insurer The Navigators Group in 2019, adding to its specialty-insurance business.[37][38] [35]
