HARMONY GOLD MINING CO LTD

Updated

Overview

Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited is a South African mining company whose core business is gold production, with a growing focus on copper. Its operations and projects span South Africa, Papua New Guinea and Australia, encompassing underground and open-pit mining, surface retreatment and copper assets.[1][2]

The company describes its strategy as producing safe, profitable ounces and creating value through responsible mining, with investment in high-grade gold and copper and geographic diversification.[3] Established in 1950, Harmony reported FY2025 revenue of R73.896 billion (US$4.071 billion) and a workforce of 47,111 permanent employees and contractors.[4] [2]

Products & services

Harmony Gold’s principal product is gold. It produced 44,464 kg (1,429,551 oz) in FY2026, compared with 46,023 kg (1.480 million oz) in FY2025. At Great Noligwa, the company describes processing that includes reverse gold leach, acid uranium leach, gold cyanide leach, carbon-in-pulp and electrowinning; the plant’s stated capacity is 260 kt per month.[7]

Other reported outputs include silver, uranium and copper. Hidden Valley is a gold-and-silver operation, and Harmony’s FY2025 PNG leaflet reports 3 million oz of silver. Uranium is a by-product: FY2025 production was 488,046 lb, attributed to Moab Khotsong. Copper became a reported output following the CSA acquisition; FY2026 results report 18,207 tonnes of copper production, while the company’s trading update reports 16,719 tonnes sold since acquisition.[11]

The reviewed sources do not provide a comparable percentage breakdown of revenue or production by product, and do not identify separate third-party service offerings.[5] [8]

Geographic presence

Harmony Gold Mining Company operates in South Africa, Papua New Guinea (PNG) and Australia. In South Africa, its footprint includes underground and open-pit mines and surface-retreatment operations, including assets in the Free State and Gauteng/West Wits areas.[15]

In PNG, the company operates Hidden Valley and is developing the Wafi-Golpu project in Morobe Province. Its Australian assets include the CSA copper mine in New South Wales and Eva Copper in Queensland; Harmony reported CSA production in FY2026.[19]

Harmony’s principal office is in Randfontein, South Africa. The company reports a workforce across its operations but the cited workforce information does not give a country-by-country distribution; the available FY2026 results also do not provide a geographic revenue or sales breakdown.[21] [15]

Business segments

Harmony Gold reports its operating segments on an operational basis: individual mines or groups of shafts are managed as operating units, while certain surface operations are combined. Its FY2025 operating disclosures cover South African underground operations—Moab Khotsong, Mponeng, Tshepong North, Tshepong South, Doornkop, Joel, Target 1, Kusasalethu and Masimong—alongside MWS and “All other surface operations”; Hidden Valley is the international operation in Papua New Guinea. The surface category aggregates operations rather than presenting each as a separate line.[22]

Using FY2025 gold production as an approximate contribution measure, the operation-level shares of group production were: Mponeng 22.5%; Moab Khotsong 13.4%; Hidden Valley 11.1%; all other surface operations 10.6%; Kusasalethu 7.9%; MWS 6.5%; Tshepong North 6.3%; Tshepong South 6.0%; Doornkop 5.9%; Masimong 3.2%; Target 1 3.0%; and Joel 3.5%. These are calculated from reported operation production in kilograms and the reported group total; they represent production shares, not revenue or profit shares. The percentages are approximate because the production figures are reported in rounded kilograms.[26][25] [22]

Company history

Harmony Gold Mining Company was established in South Africa in 1950 to operate the Harmony mine, listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in 1951, and poured its first gold in 1954. In the early 1970s it expanded through a merger involving the Merriespruit and Virginia mines. After becoming independent in 1997, Harmony grew through a series of acquisitions, including Evander, Kalgold, Randfontein and Avgold.[27][28]

In 2002, Harmony and ARMgold formed the Free Gold joint venture, and the two companies merged in 2003, consolidating Harmony’s South African operations. Harmony also entered Papua New Guinea through the Hidden Valley project; it later partnered with Newcrest in the Morobe Mining joint venture, and Hidden Valley poured its first gold in 2009.[29]

The company sold its Evander interest in a transaction completed in 2013, then expanded its South African portfolio with the 2018 acquisition of Moab Khotsong and the 2020 acquisition of Mponeng and Mine Waste Solutions. Harmony began diversifying into copper with its 2022 acquisition of Australia’s Eva Copper project, followed by its 2025 acquisition of MAC Copper, owner of the CSA mine. Leadership transitions included Peter Steenkamp becoming CEO in 2016 and Beyers Nel succeeding him in 2025.[33]
