Company history
Grand Canyon University traces its roots to Grand Canyon College, founded in Prescott, Arizona, in 1949. The college moved to Phoenix in 1951, received regional accreditation in 1968, and adopted the Grand Canyon University name in 1989. It began distance-learning programs in 1997 and introduced online business and education programs in 2003.[25]
Grand Canyon Education’s predecessor was formed in 2003 to acquire the university’s assets; the acquisition was completed in February 2004, converting the university from nonprofit to for-profit status. The predecessor incorporated in 2005 and took the Grand Canyon Education, Inc. name in 2008. The company’s shares began trading on Nasdaq after its November 2008 IPO.[26][27][28]
On July 1, 2018, GCE sold the university to an independent nonprofit and continued as its services provider under a master services agreement. In January 2019, GCE acquired Orbis Education, extending its work into nursing and healthcare education partnerships.[29][30] [25][26][27][28][29][30]
