GENWORTH FINANCIAL INC

Updated

Overview

Genworth Financial Inc. is a U.S.-focused financial services company whose businesses center on private mortgage insurance and aging-related services. Through Enact, it provides private mortgage insurance in the United States; through CareScout, it offers aging-care services and long-term-care insurance. Its legacy insurance operations manage existing long-term-care, life and annuity policies, which are no longer actively sold.[1]

The company describes its purpose as “We empower families to navigate the aging journey with confidence.” [5] Genworth reported fiscal 2025 revenue of $7.301 billion and 3,100 employees as of December 31, 2025.[6] [1]

Products & services

Genworth’s CareScout Insurance offers individual long-term-care insurance, launched in 2025, with customizable coverage levels, inflation protection, wellness tools, care-planning services and access to the CareScout Quality Network. CareScout also provides fee-based aging-care advice, assessments and consulting; its network connects members with home-care providers credentialed by CareScout.[7]

Through Enact, Genworth provides primary mortgage insurance on individual loans or aggregated loan portfolios. Customers select coverage—generally 6% to 35% per policy—and can pay premiums monthly, annually, as a single upfront payment, or through a combination of upfront and monthly payments; premiums may be borrower- or lender-paid. Enact also offers pool mortgage insurance, primarily for secondary-market credit enhancement, and fee-based contract underwriting for mortgage-loan investor and mortgage-insurance compliance.[14]

Genworth continues to service legacy Closed Block policies, although these products are no longer sold by its legacy subsidiaries. They include long-term-care coverage for care at home, in assisted living or in nursing facilities; life products such as term, universal and corporate-owned life insurance; funding agreements; and fixed and variable annuities.[20][21]

In 2025, Enact accounted for approximately 28.0% of Genworth’s total premium revenue and Closed Block for approximately 71.7%, calculated from the reported segment amounts; these are segment, not individual-product, percentages.[22] [7]

Geographic presence

Genworth Financial’s principal market is the United States, where its Enact subsidiary provides private mortgage insurance. The company also has operations and subsidiaries outside the U.S., principally in Mexico, Bermuda, and India; its international insurance operations are predominantly in Mexico. The company does not provide a geographic breakdown of revenue or sales in the cited disclosures.[4]

Its U.S. locations include its headquarters in Richmond, Virginia, a Closed Block facility in Lynchburg, Virginia, and Enact’s headquarters in Raleigh, North Carolina, as well as offices in Washington, D.C. and other U.S. locations. The company also reports leased office space in Mexico.[25][26] Genworth lists 3,100 employees as of December 31, 2025, and identifies Richmond, Virginia as its headquarters; it does not provide an employee distribution by geography.[27] [4]

Business segments

Genworth Financial reports two business segments: **Enact**, which provides private mortgage insurance, primarily for individually underwritten residential loans, and **Closed Block**, which contains legacy protection and retirement-income products, including long-term care and life insurance and fixed and variable annuities. The company also separately presents **Corporate and Other** in its segment reporting.[28][20]

For 2025, measured as a share of the company’s reported $3.499 billion in premium revenue, Enact contributed approximately **28.0%** ($980 million), Closed Block **71.7%** ($2.508 billion), and Corporate and Other **0.3%** ($11 million). These percentages are shares of premium revenue, not of total consolidated revenue.[22] [28]

Company history

Genworth’s corporate roots include the Life Insurance Company of Virginia, which issued its first policy in 1871; Genworth Financial itself was formed from General Electric’s life and mortgage insurance businesses. GE announced an initial public offering in 2003, and Genworth began trading on the New York Stock Exchange in May 2004. GE completed its exit from Genworth in 2006.[29]

In 2006, Genworth expanded its Australian mortgage-insurance operations by acquiring Vero Lenders Mortgage Insurance. During 2015–2016, it sold its Lifestyle Protection Insurance business to AXA and its European mortgage-insurance business to AmTrust. It later sold its Canadian mortgage-insurance stake in 2019 and its Australian stake in 2021. In 2021, its U.S. mortgage-insurance subsidiary Enact completed an IPO, while Genworth retained majority ownership. In 2023, the company launched the CareScout Quality Network, extending its activity in the long-term-care and aging-services area.[33] [29]
