Company history
Gentex was incorporated in Michigan in 1974. Founder Fred Bauer established the company in the fire-protection market, where it introduced a dual-cell photoelectric smoke alarm.[1][3][34] In the 1980s, Gentex expanded into automotive products with electromechanical and then electrochromic auto-dimming interior mirrors; it followed with exterior electrochromic mirrors in the 1990s.[3][35]
In 2000, Gentex signed a cooperation agreement with Japanese mirror manufacturer Murakami to broaden sales of automatic-dimming mirrors using Gentex technology.[36] The company later expanded its product range beyond mirrors: it began shipping dimmable aircraft windows in 2010, acquired HomeLink in 2013, and began shipping its Full Display Mirror in 2015.[3]
Steve Downing became CEO in 2018, succeeding a progression through finance and operating roles after joining Gentex in 2002.[37] In 2025, Gentex acquired the remaining shares of VOXX International, making it a wholly owned subsidiary and adding automotive and consumer-electronics businesses, including premium audio brands and EyeLock iris-biometric technology.[38][39] [1][3][37][38][34][35][36][39]
