Business segments
Franklin Resources reports one operating segment: investment management and related services. Accordingly, that segment represents 100% of the company’s reported segment activity. For the nine months ended June 30, 2026, it reported operating revenues of $6,980.4 million and operating income of $820.1 million; management assesses segment performance primarily using consolidated net income attributable to Franklin Resources.[24][25][26]
The segment’s activities include managing sponsored funds, separate accounts, sub-advised products and other investment vehicles, alongside fund administration, distribution and shareholder services. Equity, fixed income, alternative, multi-asset and cash-management offerings are product categories, not separately reported operating segments.[27]
As an indication of product mix—not segment revenue or profit—average assets under management for the same nine-month period were approximately 41% equity, 26% fixed income, 16% alternatives, 12% multi-asset and 5% cash management.[10] [24][25][26][27][10]
Company history
Franklin Resources, Inc. was founded in New York in 1947 by Rupert H. Johnson Sr. The company launched the Franklin Income Fund in 1948, opened its first Canadian office in 1954, and went public in 1971. After Charles B. Johnson became president and CEO in 1957, the firm moved to California in 1973 and expanded internationally, opening an office in Taiwan in 1986.[28][29]
A major turning point came in 1992 with the acquisition of Templeton, which broadened the firm’s global-investing business. Franklin later added investment and wealth-management businesses including Franklin Mutual Series (1996) and Fiduciary Trust International (2001). Greg Johnson became CEO in 2005; in February 2020 he became executive chairman as Jenny Johnson took over as CEO.[5][30][31]
The firm expanded further through acquisitions, including Legg Mason in 2020, Lexington Partners in 2022 and Putnam Investments, whose acquisition was completed in January 2024. Its FY2025 annual report also records the acquisition of Apera in October 2025.[5][32] [5][30][31][28][29][32]
