Company history
Plans for an intercontinental airport in Zürich were approved in 1944, construction began in 1946, and the airport opened on 14 June 1948. The Flughafen-Immobilien-Gesellschaft, a predecessor responsible for airport facilities and operations, was founded later that year. A new passenger terminal opened in 1953, followed by the opening of the third runway in 1976.[16]
Flughafen Zürich AG began operating on 1 April 2000, following the merger of the Zurich Airport Authority and Flughafen-Immobilien-Gesellschaft as the airport operator shifted to a privatised, semi-public company.[17] The company expanded internationally from the early 2000s, including its involvement in the Bangalore airport project, and later airport concessions in Brazil and India.[18][19] At its home airport, the intercontinental Dock E opened in 2003, while the mixed-use Circle development opened in 2020.[20][21] [16][17][18][19][20][21]
