Business segments
Fiserv officially realigned its reporting structure in the first quarter of 2024 and now reports two operating segments: Merchant Solutions ("Merchant") and Financial Solutions ("Financial"); 2023 and 2022 segment results were recast to match this structure.[31] Merchant is the commerce-facing segment, providing commerce-enabling products and services such as merchant acquiring and digital commerce, mobile payments, security and fraud solutions, stored-value offerings, and pay-by-bank solutions.[32] Its business lines are Small Business, which includes Clover for small businesses and independent software vendors, Enterprise, which serves large businesses with an integrated omnichannel operating system, and Processing, which serves financial institutions, joint ventures, and other third-party resellers that have direct merchant relationships.[33][34][35]
Financial is the financial-institution-facing segment, serving financial institution, corporate, and public sector clients with products and services for loan and deposit account processing, digital payments, and card transactions.[36] Its business lines are Digital Payments, which includes debit processing, debit network services, fraud/security, bill pay, P2P, and account-to-account transfers, Issuing, which includes credit and prepaid processing, card production, print, government payments, and student loan processing, and Banking, which includes core account processing, digital banking, financial and risk management, consulting, and check processing.[37][38][39] On a total-company revenue basis in 2024, Merchant contributed about 47% of revenue ($9.6 billion), Financial about 46% ($9.5 billion), and Corporate and Other about 7% ($1.3 billion); the recast 2023 and 2022 figures show a broadly similar mix, with Merchant at roughly 44-46%, Financial at roughly 48-49%, and Corporate and Other at about 7%.[40][41][42] [31][32][33][34][35][36][37][38][39][42][40][41]
Company history
Fiserv was formed in 1984 through the merger of First Data Processing and Sunshine State Systems, creating a national data-processing company focused on financial services. In 1986, it became a public company and listed on the Nasdaq market under the ticker FISV. In 1995, the company marked another stage in its development by launching fiserv.com and acquiring Information Technology, Inc., which expanded its client/server banking capabilities.[43]
Fiserv continued to grow through acquisitions, including the 2007 purchase of CheckFree for approximately $4.4 billion in cash, a deal that added major electronic bill payment and internet banking capabilities.[44] A larger milestone followed in July 2019, when Fiserv completed its combination with First Data, significantly increasing its scale in payments and merchant services.[45] Frank J. Bisignano, who joined Fiserv through the First Data transaction, became chief executive officer in 2020, marking a major leadership transition.[46] [46][43][44][45]
