Company history

The company traces its origins to the opening of Merchants National Bank of Muncie, Indiana, in March 1893; its official history credits Hardin Roads and local businesspeople with founding the bank.[7] In September 1982, First Merchants Corporation was organized as a financial holding company, and in 1991 the bank changed its name to First Merchants Bank.[29] The bank consolidated three subsidiary-bank charters in 2009, then expanded through the 2012 acquisition of assets and deposits from SCB Bank and its 2015 merger with Ameriana Bancorp.[31]

Further expansion followed through the 2017 merger with Independent Alliance Banks, the 2019 merger with MBT Financial (Monroe Bank & Trust), and the 2022 merger with Level One Bancorp.[34] Mark Hardwick became president and CEO in 2021, succeeding Michael C. Rechin.[37] First Merchants completed its acquisition of First Savings Financial Group in February 2026, adding First Savings Bank to the group.[38][39] [29]
