Overview
Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited is a Canadian holding company whose subsidiaries primarily provide property-and-casualty insurance and reinsurance, alongside investment management. Its insurance businesses operate across North America and international markets, serving customers worldwide. Fairfax was founded in 1985 and operates through a decentralized group of companies.[1][2]
Fairfax describes its long-term objective as growing book value per share by 15% annually and says it follows a long-term, value-oriented investment philosophy. As an indicator of scale, it reported US$31.6 billion in insurance revenue for 2025.[1][2] [3][4][5][1][2]
Products & services
Fairfax Financial Holdings’ subsidiaries offer property and casualty insurance and reinsurance. Their products include commercial property and liability coverage, specialty insurance, and treaty and facultative reinsurance. In North America, Northbridge sells Canadian commercial insurance through its Northbridge and Federated brands, while Crum & Forster writes U.S. commercial coverage, principally in specialty lines. Odyssey Group underwrites specialty insurance and reinsurance; Brit operates as a Lloyd’s specialty insurer and reinsurer; and Allied World offers property, casualty and specialty insurance and reinsurance.[6][7][8][9][10]
Specific offerings vary by subsidiary. Crum & Forster lists commercial property and casualty, cyber, professional liability, environmental and accident-and-health products; its occupational-accident coverage can include medical, accidental-death and disability-income benefits for independent contractors. Allied World offers primary and excess casualty, umbrella and professional-liability coverage. Life-insurance operations offer endowments, deferred annuities, term life, group retirement benefits and accident-and-health policies; Eurolife also offers whole life insurance.[11][12][13][14][15] In 2024, property accounted for 34.8% of Fairfax’s insurance revenue, casualty 54.1% and specialty 11.1%.[16] [6][7][8][9][10][15][16][16][16][11][12][13][14]
Geographic presence
Fairfax Financial Holdings is headquartered in Toronto, Canada. Its insurance operations span North America and international markets: Northbridge operates in Canada, while Crum & Forster and Zenith National operate in the United States. Its international insurers write local-market risks primarily across Asia, continental Europe and Latin America; Gulf Insurance operates across the Middle East and North Africa.[17][18][19]
In 2024, the United States accounted for about 55% of Fairfax’s insurance revenue ($17.17 billion), followed by Other International markets at 19% ($5.78 billion), the Middle East and Asia at 17% ($5.25 billion), and Canada at 9% ($2.87 billion). Fairfax does not break out Europe, Africa or Latin America separately in that geographic revenue presentation.[20] [18][19][20][20][20][20][20][17]
Business segments
Fairfax reports three property-and-casualty insurance and reinsurance segments. North American Insurers comprises Northbridge, Crum & Forster and Zenith National, which write commercial property, casualty and specialty insurance principally in Canada and the United States [21]. Global Insurers and Reinsurers includes Allied World, Odyssey Group, Brit and Ki, with a focus on specialty insurance and reinsurance worldwide [22]. International Insurers and Reinsurers serves local markets across Asia, continental Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa [23].
Two further reporting segments are Life insurance and Run-off, which includes life operations and legacy insurance liabilities, and Non-insurance companies, which includes restaurant and retail businesses, Fairfax India, Thomas Cook India and other holdings [24][25][26][27][28][29]. Based on 2025 insurance revenue plus non-insurance revenue, Global Insurers and Reinsurers contributed approximately 40% of the combined total, North American Insurers 23%, Non-insurance companies 21%, International Insurers and Reinsurers 15%, and Life insurance and Run-off less than 1% [2]. This revenue mix excludes investment income, which Fairfax presents separately in assessing segment performance [30][31]. [21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29][32][32][32][32][33][30][31][2]
Company history
Fairfax Financial Holdings traces its origins to 1985, when a group led by Prem Watsa gained voting control of Markel Financial Holdings through a private placement. Watsa became chairman and chief executive, and the business was subsequently renamed Fairfax Financial.[34][1][35]
Fairfax expanded its insurance and reinsurance businesses through acquisitions. In 1996, it acquired the businesses that became the foundation of Odyssey Re, followed by its acquisition of Crum & Forster in 1998.[36][37] It organized several Canadian insurance operations under Northbridge, which completed an initial public offering in 2003 while Fairfax retained control.[38][39] Later major acquisitions included Zenith National in 2010, Brit in 2015 and Allied World in 2017.[40][41][42] [34][1][35][36][37][38][39][40][41][42]
