Overview

Fair Isaac Corporation, known as FICO, is an applied analytics and decisioning software company founded in 1956 on the premise that data, used intelligently, can improve business decisions. It develops analytics, software, and scoring solutions that help organizations automate and improve decisions, with particularly strong positions in financial services as well as insurance, retail, telecommunications, automotive lending, and the public sector [1].

The company operates through two core businesses, Scores and Software. Its Scores segment includes B2B credit-risk products led by the FICO Score, the standard measure of consumer credit risk in the U.S. and a key input in most U.S. credit decisions, while its Software segment provides decision management, fraud, origination, optimization, and analytics products delivered through SaaS and on-premises offerings [4].

FICO’s software is used by thousands of businesses in more than 80 countries, and its scores are available in over 40 countries, giving it a broad international footprint even though the Americas account for the large majority of revenue [2]. For scale, the company employed 3,586 people across 27 countries as of September 30, 2024, and generated $1.718 billion in fiscal 2024 revenue [9][10].

Products & services

Fair Isaac’s core product set includes its Scores business and a portfolio of decisioning software. Its B2B scoring products center on the FICO® Score, a three-digit consumer credit score ranging from 300 to 850 that is generated by applying proprietary algorithms to bureau data from Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax; the score is used across origination, account management, and consumer marketing. Consumer offerings also include myFICO.com subscription products. Newer score versions include FICO® Score 10 and FICO® Score 10 T, with 10 T adding trended credit data to improve predictive power. In fiscal 2024, the Scores segment represented 54% of company revenue.[4]

The company’s main software foundation is FICO® Platform, an analytic and decisioning environment for orchestrating high-velocity decisions at scale. The platform is described as modular and cloud-based, allowing customers to combine data from multiple sources, apply advanced analytics, and execute workflows in real time; its architecture follows cloud-native design principles and uses shared security context and FICO standard APIs. FICO has been moving software products onto this platform, including FICO® Decision Modeler, the on-platform version of Blaze Advisor®. Other named software products include FICO® Xpress Optimization, which provides optimization solvers plus a modeling and programming language; FICO® Analytics Workbench™, which supports explainable machine-learning models for governed or regulated decisions; FICO® Data Orchestrator for data retrieval, mapping, and transformation; FICO® DMP Streaming for real-time and batch ingestion with in-stream analytics and complex event processing; FICO® Decision Optimizer for selecting action combinations to improve portfolio outcomes; and FICO® Business Outcome Simulator for scenario analysis. In fiscal 2024, platform software accounted for 28% of on-premises and SaaS software revenue, and platform ARR was 31% of software ARR at year-end.[14]

Fair Isaac also sells pre-configured application products. FICO® Originations Solution is an application-to-decision credit origination product that automates and improves credit request processing for banks, finance companies, online lenders, auto lenders, and other lenders. FICO® Customer Communication Service is an omnichannel digital communication manager that supports 24/7 one-way and two-way customer communications, including alerts, messaging, virtual agents, and self-service. FICO® Strategy Director and the legacy off-platform FICO® TRIAD® Customer Manager automate risk-based decisions for existing credit customers at both the account and customer level. FICO® Fraud Solutions target payments fraud and application fraud across cards, money transfers, and stolen or synthetic identity account opening, using large-scale real-time analytics and models trained on transaction data contributed by more than 10,000 institutions in the FICO® Falcon® Intelligence Network. The Software segment represented 46% of fiscal 2024 revenue and included both software and professional services.

Business segments

Fair Isaac reports two operating and reportable segments: Scores and Software. The Scores segment includes business-to-business scoring solutions and services that provide predictive credit and other scores for integration into clients’ transaction flows and decision processes, as well as business-to-consumer scoring offerings including myFICO.com. The Software segment includes pre-configured analytic and decision-management solutions for uses such as account origination, customer management, customer engagement, fraud detection, and marketing; it also includes FICO Platform, stand-alone analytic and decisioning software, and associated professional services, with delivery as either SaaS or on-premises software.[4][38]

Within Scores in fiscal 2024, about $711.8 million came from B2B scoring and $207.8 million from B2C scoring. Within Software, about $711.3 million came from on-premises and SaaS software and $86.5 million from professional services, so the segment is predominantly software revenue rather than services revenue.

Company history

Fair Isaac Corporation was founded in 1956 by Bill Fair and Earl Isaac, building the company around the use of data and analytics to improve business decisions.[43][44] A major milestone came in 1989 with the introduction of the FICO® Score, which became the company’s best-known product in consumer credit assessment.[45] In 2001, FICO launched myFICO.com, extending direct consumer access to its credit-score products and education.[46]
