F5, Inc. operates in application delivery and security, helping organizations deploy, run, secure, optimize, and govern applications and APIs across on-premises, cloud, and edge environments. Its principal offerings include BIG-IP for application delivery and security, NGINX for modern applications and APIs, and Distributed Cloud Services for security, multicloud networking, and edge computing.[1][2][3][4]
F5’s stated mission is to “secure and deliver extraordinary digital experiences.” It serves customers across the Americas, EMEA, and APAC, including enterprises, government organizations, and service providers. Products & services
F5’s product portfolio combines hardware, software and SaaS for application delivery and security across on-premises, cloud and edge environments. BIG-IP serves enterprise and service-provider applications through traffic-management, DNS, access-policy, web-application-firewall, SSL orchestration and firewall capabilities. BIG-IP systems include rSeries and VELOS platforms, which support BIG-IP modules, automation and multi-tenancy [1][3][8][9][10].
For modern, container-based applications, NGINX Plus combines load balancing, web serving, content caching and API gateway functions. NGINX One Console provides SaaS management, monitoring and analytics across deployments; NGINX Ingress Controller manages Kubernetes traffic, and WAF for NGINX provides application-layer security and denial-of-service defense [11][12][13][14][15]. F5 Distributed Cloud Services includes WAAP security—with web-application and API protection, DDoS and bot mitigation—as well as Network Connect for managed connectivity, App Connect for cross-cloud application connectivity, Distributed Cloud DNS and CDN, and App Stack for managed Kubernetes deployments [16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24].
F5 also provides maintenance, training and consulting services [25]. Its disclosures report product revenue by systems and software categories, rather than by individual named product; the available product disclosures do not establish a revenue percentage for specific products [26]. Company history
F5 was founded in Seattle in 1996 by Jeff Hussey, Mike Almquist, and Adam Feuer. After initially exploring virtual-reality gaming, the founders pivoted to managing internet traffic and developed BIG/ip, an early product for directing application traffic.[38] F5 completed its initial public offering in June 1999.[39]
During the 2000s and early 2010s, F5 broadened its offerings through acquisitions: MagniFire Websystems in 2004 added web application security technology, and Acopia Networks in 2007 expanded its reach into file virtualization and storage networking.[40][41] In 2012, it acquired Traffix to add telecom signaling capabilities, followed in 2013 by LineRate Systems, which brought software-defined networking technology.[42][43]
François Locoh-Donou became president and CEO in April 2017, succeeding John McAdam.[44] F5 completed its acquisition of NGINX in 2019, extending its capabilities in modern application delivery, and acquired application security company Shape Security in 2020.[45][46] In 2021, it acquired Volterra to expand into edge and distributed cloud services; that year, the company also adopted the name F5, Inc., replacing F5 Networks.[47][48]
