EXPONENT INC

Updated

Overview

Exponent, Inc. is a science and engineering consulting firm that applies expertise across more than 90 technical disciplines to investigate complex technical problems and advise on products, processes, safety and environmental challenges. Its work is organized into Engineering and Other Scientific and Environmental and Health services.[1]

The company serves clients internationally, with offices across North America, Europe and Asia. Exponent describes its purpose as fostering scientific and engineering expertise and collaboration to develop objective solutions to clients’ challenges.[4]

Exponent reported fiscal 2025 revenue of $582.0 million and had 1,212 employees as of January 2, 2026; most employees were based in the United States. Its history traces back to Failure Analysis Associates, founded in 1967, and it adopted the Exponent name in 1998.[7] [1]

Products & services

Exponent provides expert scientific and engineering consulting rather than a catalog of branded products. Its Engineering and Other Scientific services include product and system performance and reliability assessment, failure and recall investigations, product development, workplace safety, and intellectual-property support [10]. Technical capabilities include electronic-product failure analysis and reliability assessment; software safety and reliability; biomedical-device design, testing, and validation; computational fluid dynamics; and fire, explosion, and process-safety analysis [11]. Product-development services can include prototyping, testing, design review, risk analysis, regulatory compliance, and recall support [14].

Exponent’s Environmental and Health services include environmental and human-health risk evaluation, exposure assessment, and scientific and regulatory support for chemicals, foods, supplements, pesticides, consumer and medical products, and pharmaceuticals [15][16]. Its human-factors work assesses how factors such as attention, perception, memory, reaction time, judgment, and dexterity affect product and system use [17]. The company reports revenue across two service segments—Engineering and Other Scientific and Environmental and Health—but does not provide revenue percentages by individual product or service [18]. [10]

Geographic presence

Exponent’s operations and sales extend beyond the United States: its FY2025 filing reports a presence in the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Ireland, Germany and Canada, and says it conducts business in other countries. The filing does not quantify revenue by country or region.[4][19]

At January 2, 2026, Exponent had 1,212 employees, 89% in the United States and 11% in other global regions; no country-level employee breakdown is given.[8] As of July 3, 2026, it leased office, laboratory or storage space in 13 U.S. states and the District of Columbia, as well as China, Germany, Hong Kong, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.[20][21] Its specifically identified U.S. office, laboratory and warehouse locations include Menlo Park, California; Phoenix, Arizona; and Natick, Massachusetts.[22] [4]

Business segments

Exponent reports two operating segments. Engineering and Other Scientific provides technical consulting across practices primarily in engineering. In FY2025, the segment generated $493.893 million in revenue, approximately 84.9% of total revenue.[3][23] Environmental and Health provides consulting and analysis on environmental hazards, risks, and their effects on human health and the environment, including epidemiological and health-risk work. It generated $88.121 million, approximately 15.1% of FY2025 revenue.[3][23]

Total FY2025 revenue was $582.014 million.[23] [3]

Company history

Exponent was founded in 1967 as Failure Analysis Associates, a partnership formed by three Stanford professors and two Stanford Research Institute engineers to investigate failures and accidents. It was incorporated in California in 1968, reincorporated in Delaware as Failure Analysis Associates, Inc. in 1988, and placed under a holding company, The Failure Group, Inc., in 1989.[24][9]

Failure Analysis Associates went public on Nasdaq in 1990 under the ticker FAIL. In 1998, the holding company changed its name to Exponent, Inc.[24][9]

Catherine Ford Corrigan, who joined the company in 1996, became president in 2016 and chief executive officer and a board member in 2018.[25] [9]
