EXPAND ENERGY Corp

Updated

Overview

Expand Energy Corporation is a U.S. energy company focused on producing natural gas, with additional oil and natural gas liquids production and marketing activities. It describes itself as the largest U.S. natural gas producer by net daily production. Its principal operating areas are the Haynesville region of Louisiana and Texas and the Appalachian region of Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio.[1][2]

Formed when Chesapeake Energy and Southwestern Energy completed their merger in 2024, Expand Energy states that its mission is to deliver energy affordably, reliably and responsibly. It had approximately 1,600 employees at the end of 2025; its natural gas, oil and natural gas liquids revenue and marketing revenue together totaled approximately $11.6 billion that year. Its production footprint is concentrated in the United States.[3] [1]

Products & services

Expand Energy produces natural gas, oil and natural gas liquids (NGLs) from shale formations in the Haynesville region and Appalachia. Its Haynesville and Northeast Appalachia production is natural gas, while Southwest Appalachia also produces oil and NGLs. In 2025, natural gas accounted for approximately 88% of the company’s $8.48 billion in revenue from its own production, with NGLs accounting for 9% and oil for 4%; these percentages exclude derivatives and marketing revenue.[7]

Expand Energy also markets natural gas, oil and NGLs purchased from joint-interest owners, taking control of the production at specified delivery points and reselling it to third parties. This activity generated $3.16 billion in separately reported marketing revenue in 2025. Through a 35%-owned joint venture, the company also participates in gathering and treating Haynesville natural gas for Gulf Coast markets, including LNG export markets.[11] [7]

Geographic presence

Expand Energy’s onshore U.S. operations are concentrated in three regions: the Haynesville and Bossier shales in Louisiana and Texas; Northeast Appalachia’s Marcellus Shale in Pennsylvania; and Southwest Appalachia’s Marcellus and Utica shales in West Virginia and Ohio. At year-end 2025, it reported approximately 745,000 net acres in Haynesville, 704,000 in Northeast Appalachia and 592,000 in Southwest Appalachia.[7][13]

In 2025, natural gas, oil and NGL sales attributed to those producing regions were $3.477 billion, $2.860 billion and $2.139 billion, respectively. These figures identify where production originated, not where customers were located; the company also describes access from Haynesville to Gulf Coast markets, including LNG export markets.[14][12]

Expand lists corporate offices in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Spring, Texas. In February 2026, it announced plans to relocate its headquarters from Oklahoma City to Houston in mid-2026.[15][16] [7]

Business segments

Expand Energy reports one segment: exploration and production of natural gas, oil and natural gas liquids. It does not report Haynesville or its Appalachian operating areas as separate business segments; marketing is ancillary to its exploration-and-production activities.[17]

For operating-area analysis, Expand distinguishes Haynesville in Louisiana and Texas, Northeast Appalachia in Pennsylvania’s Marcellus Shale, and Southwest Appalachia in the Marcellus and Utica shales of West Virginia and Ohio.[18] In 2025, these areas contributed approximately 41%, 34% and 25%, respectively, of natural gas, oil and NGL sales. Those percentages exclude separately reported marketing revenue and therefore are not shares of total company revenue.[14][19] [17]

Company history

Expand Energy traces its history to two companies. Chesapeake Energy was founded in Oklahoma City in 1989 by Aubrey McClendon and Tom Ward and went public in 1993. It expanded through shale development and acquisitions, including a major move into the Appalachian Basin in 2005 and the announcement of its Haynesville Shale discovery in 2008. Southwestern Energy began in Arkansas in 1929 as a gas-distribution business. It began testing the Fayetteville Shale in 2004 and acquired Appalachian natural-gas assets from Chesapeake in 2014.[20]

Chesapeake entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings in 2020 and emerged in February 2021. It subsequently acquired Vine Energy in 2021 and Chief E&D Holdings and associated assets in 2022. Southwestern also expanded in 2021 through its acquisitions of Indigo Natural Resources and GEP Haynesville. Chesapeake and Southwestern completed their merger on October 1, 2024, and the combined company adopted the Expand Energy Corporation name.[27] [20]
