Overview

Eversource Energy is a regulated utility holding company that delivers electricity, natural gas and water in New England. Its businesses include electric transmission and distribution, natural-gas distribution and water distribution, with operations centered on Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. The company describes its purpose in terms of providing safe, reliable and sustainable service to the communities it serves.[1][2]

Eversource serves approximately 4.4 million customers and employs nearly 10,000 people. It reported $13.547 billion in operating revenue for 2025.[2][3] [1]+2

Products & services

Eversource Energy’s principal services are regulated electricity delivery and supply, natural gas delivery and supply, and water service for residential, commercial and industrial customers. Its electric utilities distribute power in Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Hampshire and maintain transmission facilities connected to the New England grid. Customers may obtain electricity supply through a utility service or a competitive supplier; Eversource continues to provide delivery service when a customer chooses another supplier. Transmission service is charged under regulated tariffs.[4]+2

Its natural gas utilities provide firm gas sales and transportation service in Connecticut and Massachusetts. Eligible customers can purchase gas from a third-party supplier while using Eversource’s network for delivery; certain higher-volume customers can obtain interruptible service. Utility-purchased gas costs are passed through without a markup.[7]+2 Its Aquarion water utilities collect, treat and distribute drinking water. Their sources have an estimated supply yield of about 135 million gallons per day, with water processed at surface-water treatment plants and well stations.[10]

In 2025, electric, natural gas and water retail tariff sales represented approximately 65.8%, 17.7% and 1.8%, respectively, of consolidated operating revenue. Wholesale transmission revenue represented approximately 4.9%. These are calculated revenue shares, rather than separately reported product margins.[11] [4]+11

Geographic presence

Eversource Energy’s utility operations are concentrated in Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Its electric distribution subsidiaries serve all three states: Connecticut Light & Power in Connecticut, NSTAR Electric in Massachusetts and Public Service Company of New Hampshire in New Hampshire. Its natural gas distribution subsidiaries serve Connecticut and Massachusetts. Eversource describes its corporate headquarters as being in Boston, Massachusetts, and Hartford, Connecticut.[12][13]

Its electric service territory includes 157 Connecticut towns, 159 Massachusetts towns and 206 New Hampshire towns. Its gas territory covers 85 Connecticut towns and 121 Massachusetts towns. The Aquarion water utilities also operated across the three states; approximately 91% of their roughly 248,000 customers were in Connecticut in 2024. Eversource reports revenue by business segment rather than providing a state-by-state revenue breakdown.[14]+2 [12]+4

Business segments

Eversource Energy reports four utility segments: Electric Distribution, Electric Transmission, Natural Gas Distribution and Water Distribution. Electric Distribution covers the regulated distribution operations of CL&P, NSTAR Electric and PSNH, including NSTAR Electric’s solar facilities; Electric Transmission covers those utilities’ regulated transmission operations. Natural Gas Distribution comprises Yankee Gas, NSTAR Gas and EGMA, while Water Distribution comprises Aquarion’s regulated water business.[17]

Based on 2025 operating revenue, Electric Distribution accounted for approximately 66% of the four reportable segments’ combined revenue, Natural Gas Distribution 17%, Electric Transmission 15% and Water Distribution 2%. These are shares of gross segment revenue **before eliminations**, not shares of consolidated revenue. Eversource also reports an “Other” category, which includes corporate and service-company activities, other unregulated subsidiaries and certain unconsolidated investments; offshore wind is not a separate reportable segment.[18] [17]+6

Company history

Eversource Energy traces its corporate history to Northeast Utilities, formed in 1966 when Connecticut Light & Power, Hartford Electric Light and Western Massachusetts Electric affiliated. Northeast Utilities acquired Public Service Company of New Hampshire in 1992 and merged with NSTAR in 2012, retaining the Northeast Utilities name. It adopted the Eversource Energy name in 2015.[19]+2

Eversource expanded into water distribution by acquiring Aquarion Water in 2017. In 2020, it acquired Columbia Gas of Massachusetts’s gas-distribution assets from NiSource. After investing in offshore wind projects, Eversource completed the sale of its interests in South Fork Wind and Revolution Wind in 2024.[22]+2 [19]+5
