Company profile

Evergy, Inc.

Updated

Overview

Evergy, Inc. is an electric utility holding company whose regulated utilities generate, transmit, and distribute electricity in Kansas and Missouri. Its regional service area includes about 1.7 million customers, and the company reports one reportable business segment.[1]

Evergy’s mission is “to empower a better future.” Its scale includes $5.96 billion in operating revenue for FY2025 and 4,691 employees as of December 31, 2025.[7][8] [1]

Products & services

Evergy’s principal customer product is regulated electric service: its utilities generate, transmit, distribute and sell electricity to residential, commercial and industrial customers. Customers are generally billed monthly under approved tariffs based on kilowatt-hour usage. The system is supported by about 15,800 MW of owned generation and renewable-power purchase agreements.[9][10] Its retail renewable options include Solar Subscription, Wind Subscription and net metering for customers with their own generation; the Wind Subscription offering allows customers to select renewable energy for up to 100% of their power for an additional charge.[11]

Commercial and industrial customers can use Renewables Direct to offset some of their energy use with renewable resources. Evergy also offers energy-efficiency programs through its Kansas and Missouri utilities, sells surplus power and capacity through the Southwest Power Pool marketplace and bilateral contracts, and supplies tariffed industrial steam to customers of Evergy Missouri West.[14] In 2025, electric retail sales represented approximately 81% of operating revenue, based on reported retail revenue of $4,844.7 million and total operating revenue of $5,961.6 million.[19] [9]

Geographic presence

Evergy, Inc.’s electric utility operations are concentrated in Kansas and Missouri. Its service territory is organized into four areas: Kansas Central, Kansas Metro, Missouri Metro, and Missouri West. The company reports that its utility subsidiaries serve about 1.7 million customers across the two states; the available disclosure does not allocate customers or revenue by state or service area.[2]

Examples of communities in the territory include Topeka, Pittsburg, and Wichita in Kansas Central; Overland Park and Lenexa in Kansas Metro; and St. Joseph, Liberty, and Warrensburg in Missouri West. Missouri Metro covers much of the Missouri side of the Kansas City metropolitan area and also includes communities such as Marshall, Salisbury, and Carrollton. Evergy is headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri, and identifies Topeka, Kansas, as an operating headquarters. Its disclosures describe the Evergy Companies as one consolidated segment and do not provide employee distribution by geography.[1] [2]

Business segments

Evergy reports one operating and reportable segment, covering its consolidated regulated electric utility operations; this represents 100% of the company’s reported segment structure. It does not disclose separate segment contributions for its utility subsidiaries.[26]

The filing identifies Evergy Kansas Central as serving Kansas, Evergy Metro as serving Missouri and Kansas, and Evergy Missouri West as serving Missouri. These are operating subsidiaries, not separately reported segments, so the filing provides no individual segment percentages for them.[2] [26]

Company history

Evergy’s roots reach back to 1881, when investors secured an electric-power contract in the Kansas City area. Its predecessor utility histories developed through Kansas Gas and Electric Company, organized in 1909, and Kansas City Light & Power Company, established in 1916 and renamed Kansas City Power & Light Company in 1922.[27]

In 1992, Kansas Power and Light merged with Kansas Gas and Electric to form Western Resources; the company adopted the name Westar Energy in 2002. Separately, Kansas City Power & Light merged with Aquila in 2008, expanding its Missouri operations.[27]

Great Plains Energy and Westar Energy completed their merger on June 4, 2018, creating Evergy, Inc.[28][29] The utilities continued operating under their existing names after the merger, then transitioned to the Evergy brand in October 2019.[30] [29]
