Overview
Essent Group Ltd. is a Bermuda-domiciled holding company operating in the housing finance and insurance sectors. Its core business is private mortgage insurance for U.S. residential mortgages, complemented by mortgage reinsurance and credit-risk-management services, as well as title insurance and settlement services.[1][2] Its mortgage insurance helps lenders manage credit risk on residential loans, particularly those with lower down payments.[3][4]
The company’s primary mortgage-insurance market is the United States, where its insurer is licensed in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Its reinsurance operations also cover U.S. mortgage risk and include international activity.[3][5][6] Essent describes its core mission as “prudently growing shareholder value and promoting affordable and sustainable homeownership.” [7]
For fiscal 2025, Essent reported consolidated revenue of approximately $1.26 billion.[8] It was organized as a Bermuda limited liability company in 2008.[2] [1][2][3][4][5][6][8][7]
Products & services
Essent’s principal product is private mortgage insurance (MI) for U.S. residential first-lien mortgages, which transfers mortgage credit risk and enables lenders to make loans with smaller down payments. MI premiums can be paid monthly, as a single upfront premium, or annually in certain cases; single premiums are recognized over estimated policy lives of 36–156 months, and substantially all single-premium policies in force at June 30, 2026 were non-refundable.[9][10][11] Essent’s MI options include borrower-paid and lender-paid monthly or single-premium coverage, split-premium MI (an upfront payment combined with a lower monthly charge), and EssentFLEX, which allows upfront contribution and monthly borrower-paid MI to be adjusted.[12][13][14]
Other offerings include mortgage reinsurance through Essent Re, including U.S. mortgage credit-risk-transfer transactions and quota-share reinsurance of Essent Guaranty’s new insurance written; the business also provides underwriting consulting to third-party reinsurers.[9][15] CUW Solutions provides contract underwriting for mortgage lenders and, on a limited basis, MI underwriting for affiliates; specified underwriting errors may trigger lender indemnification under contractual terms.[16][17] Essent also offers title insurance and title-settlement services, including title procurement, curative work, escrow and settlement, and services for home purchases, refinances, private wealth and home equity.[18][19]
Monthly-premium policies accounted for 98% of net insurance written in the first half of 2026; the company’s disclosures do not provide revenue shares for individual MI product options.[11] [9][10][11][15][16][17][18][12][13][14][19]
Geographic presence
Essent’s mortgage insurance operations are concentrated in the United States: Essent Guaranty is headquartered in Radnor, Pennsylvania, operates a center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and is licensed in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Essent Title lists locations in Radnor and Coraopolis, Pennsylvania, and Columbia, Missouri; its title services are available nationwide through direct operations, agents, and/or title partnerships.[20][21][22][23]
Essent Group Ltd. and Essent Re are domiciled in Bermuda. Essent Re reinsures U.S. mortgage risk and, from 2026, certain property-and-casualty risks through the Lloyd’s of London market. Essent’s filings do not provide geographic revenue or premium percentages, or employee counts by office; its segment reporting is by business line rather than geography.[2][24][25][26][8] [20][21][22][23][2][24][25][26][8][22][23]
Business segments
For FY2025, Essent Group reported two reportable segments: Mortgage Insurance and Reinsurance. The company’s segment presentation separates third-party reinsurance from Mortgage Insurance; it previously combined U.S. mortgage insurance and GSE/other mortgage risk-share activities in one segment, and recast prior periods following the change. Management uses income before income taxes to assess segment performance and allocate resources.[26][27]
Mortgage Insurance provides private mortgage insurance supporting residential mortgages, including loans with lower down payments. In FY2025, it generated approximately $1.054 billion of revenue—83.6% of consolidated revenue—and $768 million of pre-tax income, or 93.5% of consolidated pre-tax income.[28][8]
Reinsurance covers mortgage risks, including U.S. mortgage risk assumed through GSE credit-risk-transfer arrangements, and the reported segment also reflects the company’s third-party reinsurance activities. In FY2025, it generated approximately $89.6 million of revenue—7.1% of consolidated revenue—and $77.6 million of pre-tax income, or 9.4% of consolidated pre-tax income.[5][26][8]
Title insurance is an operating business, but it is not a separate reportable segment; it is included in Corporate & Other, which also includes holding-company activities and unallocated expenses. In FY2025, Corporate & Other recorded $117.7 million of revenue and a $24.1 million pre-tax loss.[29][8] [26][27][28][5][29][8][8][8][8][8][8][8][8]
Company history
Mark A. Casale founded Essent Group in 2008. In 2009, the company announced $500 million in initial equity funding to establish a U.S. private mortgage insurer; Essent began writing business in May 2010 and issued its first mortgage insurance policies that July, alongside an additional $100 million in capital.[7][30][31]
Essent priced its initial public offering on October 30, 2013, and began trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol ESNT the following day. In 2014, its reinsurance business expanded into risk-sharing transactions with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac; a quota-share arrangement covering 25% of eligible new insurance took effect on July 1.[32][33][34]
In 2023, Essent agreed to acquire title-insurance businesses Agents National Title Holding Company and Boston National Holdings for $100 million; the acquisition closed on July 1. Agents National Title was rebranded Essent Title Insurance effective January 1, 2025.[35][36] [34][7][30][31][32][33][35][36]
