Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson, commonly known as Ericsson, is a Swedish telecommunications company that provides mobile-connectivity solutions to communications service providers, enterprises and the public sector. Its business spans mobile network equipment and software, cloud software and network services, and enterprise connectivity and communications products, including private 5G.[1][2][3][4]
Ericsson describes its purpose as “to create connections that make the unimaginable possible.” It serves customers in more than 175 countries and has approximately 89,000 employees worldwide. Net sales were SEK 236.7 billion in 2025.[5][6][7][8] [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]
Products & services
Ericsson’s Networks products include Ericsson Radio System, a modular portfolio of antennas, radios, RAN Compute, site equipment and transport for mobile networks. Its radio range includes macro, micro, indoor, millimeter-wave and Massive MIMO units; antenna-integrated radios combine radio and antenna functions to increase network capacity and coverage. Ericsson Cloud RAN provides cloud-native software that separates radio-access functions from dedicated hardware, enabling more flexible deployment. Networks accounted for approximately 64% of Ericsson’s 2025 net sales.[9][10][11][12]
Its Cloud Software and Services portfolio comprises mobile core networks, network management, business and operations support systems, cognitive network solutions and managed network services. These offerings support data and voice connectivity, service orchestration and monetization, and the operation of communications networks. The portfolio includes 5G core and packet-core products, as well as tools for service orchestration and assurance. Cloud Software and Services represented approximately 26% of 2025 net sales.[13][3][14][15][16][12]
For enterprises, Ericsson offers private 5G networks, indoor connectivity and cellular-based wireless wide-area networking, including offerings associated with Cradlepoint. Its Global Communications Platform includes Vonage communications APIs that let developers add voice, video and messaging to applications. Ericsson also offers network APIs that expose capabilities such as authentication and quality of service for uses including fraud detection and video production. Geographic presence
Ericsson’s principal executive offices are in Stockholm, Sweden. Its 2025 sales were reported across the Americas (SEK 83.4 billion, 35% of total), Europe, Middle East and Africa (SEK 70.7 billion, 30%), South East Asia, Oceania and India (SEK 28.8 billion, 12%), and North East Asia (SEK 16.0 billion, 7%). The remaining SEK 37.7 billion, or 16%, was reported under “Other,” which includes intellectual-property licensing revenue rather than representing a separate geographic market.[21][22][23]
On a customer-location basis, the United States accounted for SEK 96.5 billion of 2025 sales, about 41% of Ericsson’s total. The company also reported sales of SEK 34.7 billion in the European Union, SEK 12.3 billion in India, SEK 8.5 billion in Japan and SEK 8.2 billion in China; Sweden, which is included in the EU figure, accounted for SEK 3.4 billion. This country-based allocation differs from the market-area presentation, notably because licensing revenue is assigned to “Other” in the latter.[24][23]
Ericsson reported approximately 89,000 employees in 2025. Its largest regional employee populations were in Europe and Central Asia (35,000), South Asia (22,000) and East Asia and the Pacific (13,000), followed by North America (9,000), Latin America and the Caribbean (6,000), the Middle East and North Africa (3,000), and Sub-Saharan Africa (1,000). Its listed manufacturing sites include locations in Mexico, China, Estonia and Romania, alongside supply and component hubs in other countries.[25][26] [22][23][24][25][26][21]
Business segments
Ericsson reports three operating segments—Networks, Cloud Software and Services, and Enterprise—plus an Other category. In 2025, Networks accounted for approximately 64% of net sales. It supplies mobile-network hardware, software and services, including radio access networks, transport, antennas, and deployment and lifecycle-management services. Cloud Software and Services contributed approximately 26%; it provides core-network software, network management, business and operations support systems, and managed network operations.[2][3][27]
Enterprise contributed approximately 9% of 2025 net sales. Its activities include private 5G and wireless WAN connectivity, alongside communications and network-programming platforms. Other, which includes media businesses and unallocated activities, accounted for approximately 1%. These shares are calculated from reported segment net sales of SEK 151.0 billion for Networks, SEK 62.7 billion for Cloud Software and Services, SEK 21.1 billion for Enterprise and SEK 1.8 billion for Other, against Group net sales of SEK 236.7 billion.[4][17][28][27] [2][3][4][17][28][27][27][27][27][27]
Company history
Lars Magnus Ericsson founded the company in Stockholm in 1876 as a workshop for telegraph equipment. It moved into telephone manufacturing and, in the 1890s, expanded beyond Sweden as it sought new markets. In 1918, it merged with Stockholm Allmänna Telefon to form Allmänna Telefonaktiebolaget L.M. Ericsson.[29][30]
Ericsson’s later history was shaped by mobile communications: the Nordic Mobile Telephone system of the 1980s helped lay the groundwork for GSM, while Ericsson supplied equipment for early commercial 3G networks around 2000. In 2001, Ericsson and Sony established Sony Ericsson as a jointly owned mobile-phone business. Ericsson subsequently expanded its network-equipment operations by acquiring key Marconi telecommunications assets in 2006 and Nortel’s North American CDMA and LTE assets in 2009.
