EQUINIX INC

Updated

Overview

Equinix, founded in 1998, is a global digital infrastructure company whose core business is operating Platform Equinix, a network-neutral platform of International Business Exchange (IBX) and xScale data centers, along with interconnection, infrastructure, consulting, and support services. The company’s services are designed to let customers colocate digital infrastructure and connect directly to networks, cloud providers, partners, and customers within its facilities. Equinix describes itself as the “world’s digital infrastructure company,” and states its mission as “Enabling Innovation for the Digital World.” [1]

The company’s operations are defined by a broad international footprint across the Americas, EMEA, and Asia-Pacific. Equinix reported $8.748 billion in revenue in 2024, and it says its platform spans 268 data centers in 74 markets, serving more than 10,000 customers; its sustainability disclosures indicate operations in 35 countries. This scale and geographic reach make colocation and interconnection services the defining features of the business.[4] [1]

Products & services

Equinix’s core infrastructure products are its IBX data centers and xScale data centers. IBX facilities are carrier-neutral colocation sites that provide secure space, power and direct interconnection, and Equinix sells these deployments in formats including Private Cages, Secure Cabinets and Secure Cabinet Express. Private Cages are built-to-order single-customer spaces with steel mesh walls, a locking door, a demarcation rack with patch panels, ladder rack or fiber raceway, and optional security features such as cameras and biometric hand scanners. Secure Cabinets are steel-framed cabinets with lockable ventilated doors, an integrated demarcation panel and power circuitry sized for planned utilization, while Secure Cabinet Express is a preconfigured cabinet offering intended to speed standardized deployments. xScale data centers are designed for hyperscale customers’ core workload needs, including cloud and AI workloads.[7]

Its interconnection portfolio includes Equinix Fabric, Fabric Cloud Router, Cross Connects, Internet Exchange, Internet Access, Fiber Connect, Metro Connect and Network Edge. Equinix Fabric is a software-defined interconnection service that connects customers on demand to networking, storage, compute and application providers across Equinix sites. Fabric Cloud Router is positioned for private cloud-to-cloud connectivity with built-in resiliency and virtually unlimited bandwidth. Cross Connects are point-to-point cable links between two customers in the same data center, while Internet Exchange enables internet traffic peering and can aggregate multiple peers on one port. Internet Access is a managed internet access service available in more than 60 markets that combines physical and virtual access using Fabric and Network Edge. Fiber Connect provides dark-fiber links across multiple Equinix data centers for highly reliable, extremely low-latency communication, Metro Connect offers dedicated carrier-grade links between IBXs in the same metro, and Network Edge lets customers deploy virtual network functions from multiple vendors in minutes without installing additional hardware.[12]

Equinix also sells managed and support services around these deployments. Equinix Smart View is monitoring software that gives customers real-time environmental and operating data through a customer portal, REST APIs or streaming APIs, with alerts and configurable reporting. Equinix Smart Hands provides 24/7 on-site operational support for remote management, installation and troubleshooting, and Equinix Smart Build supports larger deployments and migrations with cabling, labeling, documentation, procurement coordination and secure de-installation. Equinix Managed Solutions and Enablement Services add managed cloud, storage, backup and firewall platforms and help customers implement Fabric and Network Edge for hybrid and multicloud use cases. In 2024, Equinix disclosed revenue by broader product lines rather than by individual branded service: colocation represented about 69.3% of revenue, interconnection 17.4%, and managed infrastructure 5.3%.[21] [7]

Geographic presence

Equinix reports its business geographically across three regions: the Americas, EMEA, and Asia-Pacific. In 2024, revenue was $3.862 billion from the Americas (44% of total), $2.967 billion from EMEA (34%), and $1.919 billion from Asia-Pacific (22%). Its year-end employee base was also spread across those regions, with 5,952 employees in the Americas, 4,653 in EMEA, and 3,001 in Asia-Pacific. The company’s principal executive offices are in Redwood City, California.[27]

As of December 31, 2024, Equinix had 247 IBX data centers globally, including 107 in the Americas, 86 in EMEA, and 54 in Asia-Pacific. Its listed metro footprint spans major markets across North America and Latin America, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and Asia-Pacific, including New York, Silicon Valley, Toronto, Mexico City, São Paulo, London, Frankfurt, Paris, Dubai, Johannesburg, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore, Sydney, and Mumbai. The company also stated that it had 62 major projects underway in 36 markets across 25 countries.[31] [27]

Business segments

Equinix’s officially reported segments are geographic: Americas, EMEA, and Asia-Pacific. The company states that these are its reportable segments and that management evaluates them primarily using revenue and segment adjusted EBITDA rather than a separate product-based operating-segment structure. In the latest annual segment disclosure, the Americas generated about 44% of revenue ($3.86 billion), EMEA about 34% ($2.97 billion), and Asia-Pacific about 22% ($1.92 billion), making the Americas the largest segment by revenue contribution.[37]

Equinix also provides a secondary revenue breakdown by product line, although these are presented as revenue categories rather than formal reportable segments. Colocation/infrastructure offerings, which house customer IT equipment in IBX data centers and are typically billed based on space and power consumed, represented about 69% of total revenue. Interconnection services, which connect customers directly within and between Equinix data centers, contributed about 17%; managed infrastructure/managed solutions contributed about 5%; and other recurring offerings contributed about 2%, with the remaining roughly 6% coming from non-recurring revenue. This indicates that, economically, Equinix is primarily a colocation business with interconnection as its second-largest revenue stream.[39] [37]

Company history

Equinix was founded in Silicon Valley in 1998 by Al Avery and Jay Adelson and was incorporated on June 22, 1998 as a Delaware corporation, with an initial focus on network-neutral, multi-tenant data centers [1]. In August 2000, it went public on Nasdaq under the ticker EQIX [42]. In late 2002, Equinix completed its combination with i-STT and Pihana Pacific, a transaction it said created the largest global network-neutral Internet exchange services company and materially expanded its Asia-Pacific footprint [43].

Equinix expanded internationally through a series of major acquisitions, including IXEurope in 2007, which strengthened its European presence, and Switch and Data in 2010, which broadened its U.S. data-center platform [44][45]. A major financial and strategic milestone came in 2015, when Equinix described its first year operating as a REIT as transformational [46]. It continued to scale through the Telecity acquisition, completed in 2016, and the purchase of 29 Verizon data centers in 2017, both of which significantly extended its global footprint [47][48].
