Its hospitals provide specialized recovery care for patients with conditions including stroke and other neurological disorders, cardiac and pulmonary conditions, brain or spinal-cord injuries, complex orthopedic conditions, and amputations. These are clinical focus areas, not separately reported business segments.[21]
For FY2025, inpatient rehabilitation generated $5,935.2 million in net operating revenue, equal to approximately 100% of consolidated net operating revenue.[22][17] [21][22][17]
Company history
Founded in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1984 as HealthSouth, the company went public in 1986 and expanded through acquisitions, including its 1995 merger with ReLife and a 1997 merger agreement with Horizon/CMS.[23][24][25] In 2015, it entered home health and hospice through its acquisition of Encompass Home Health and Hospice, and expanded its rehabilitation-hospital operations by acquiring Reliant Hospital Partners’ operations.[26][27]
HealthSouth changed its corporate name to Encompass Health Corporation on January 2, 2018, reflecting the name already brought into the company through the 2015 acquisition.[28] On July 1, 2022, Encompass Health spun off its home health and hospice business as the separately traded Enhabit, Inc.[29] [23][24][25][26][27][28][29]
