Overview

Enbridge Inc. is a North American energy-infrastructure company whose core businesses are liquids pipelines; natural gas transmission and midstream; gas distribution and storage; and renewable power. Its operations include transporting and storing crude oil and natural gas liquids, moving and processing natural gas, delivering gas through utility systems, and generating renewable electricity.[1]

The company’s footprint is concentrated in Canada and the United States. Its natural gas transmission and midstream network extends across 31 U.S. states, four Canadian provinces, and the Gulf of Mexico; its gas utilities serve customers in several Canadian provinces and U.S. states.[2] Enbridge states its purpose as “Fueling quality of life. Every day” and its mission as becoming a first-choice energy delivery company in North America and beyond.[3]

For scale, Enbridge reported C$65.2 billion in total operating revenues for fiscal 2025 and described its workforce as approximately 16,000 employees.[4] [1]

Products & services

Enbridge’s Liquids Pipelines service transports, stores and exports crude oil and other liquid hydrocarbons, including natural gas liquids. Its network delivers about 6 million barrels per day; the Canadian Mainline has operating capacity of about 3.2 million barrels per day.[5][6]

Its natural-gas services include transportation, storage, gathering, compression and treating; its Gas Distribution and Storage utilities also provide gas supply and delivery, transport and storage to residential, commercial and industrial customers in Ontario, Québec, Ohio, North Carolina, Utah, Wyoming and Idaho. The company also sells renewable natural gas with associated environmental attributes.[1][7]

Renewable Power Generation supplies electricity primarily from wind and solar facilities, alongside a geothermal equity interest and offshore wind interests. Most of this segment’s revenue is generated under long-term power purchase agreements. The FY2025 disclosures reviewed provide physical capacity and volume measures but do not quantify products or services as a percentage of company performance.[8] [5]

Geographic presence

Enbridge’s principal operating footprint is in Canada and the United States. Its liquids pipelines extend across six Canadian provinces and territories and 21 U.S. states, while its gas-transmission network spans 31 U.S. states and four Canadian provinces. Its gas utilities serve Ontario and Québec, as well as Ohio, North Carolina, Utah, Wyoming and Idaho.[7][4]

Other geographic assets include renewable-generation operations in North America and Europe, with North American locations including Alberta, Ontario, Québec, Colorado, Texas, Indiana, Ohio and West Virginia.[4] Enbridge identifies Calgary as its headquarters, with major offices in Houston, Edmonton, Toronto, Duluth and Chatham; its employees are primarily in Canada and the United States, with no country-by-country workforce split specified.[11][4] Its disclosed financial revenue figures are consolidated rather than broken out by country or region.[12] [7]

Business segments

Enbridge reports four operating segments. Liquids Pipelines transports, stores and exports crude oil and other liquid hydrocarbons; Gas Transmission comprises natural-gas pipelines and gathering, processing and storage facilities; Gas Distribution and Storage supplies and delivers natural gas to residential, commercial and industrial customers and includes storage operations; and Renewable Power Generation is focused primarily on wind and solar generation, with geothermal assets. The company’s latest 2026 interim reporting continues to use these four segment names.[13][14]

By 2025 adjusted EBITDA, the approximate contributions were Liquids Pipelines 48.7% (C$9.710 billion), Gas Transmission 27.1% (C$5.397 billion), Gas Distribution and Storage 20.7% (C$4.139 billion), and Renewable Power Generation 3.4% (C$672 million). These shares use total adjusted EBITDA of C$19.952 billion, including Eliminations and Other; they are not revenue shares.[15] [13]

Company history

Enbridge’s roots extend to predecessor businesses dating to 1847, and the company was incorporated in 1949 as Interprovincial Pipe Line Company. Its first Mainline pipeline began transporting oil from Edmonton to Superior, Wisconsin, in 1950; Line 5 followed in 1953.[16]

During the 1990s, the company expanded through acquisitions including Consumers’ Gas, and IPL Energy adopted the Enbridge name in 1998. Enbridge completed its merger with Spectra Energy in 2017, expanding its natural-gas pipeline business, and the Line 3 Replacement entered service in 2021. Greg Ebel became president and CEO in 2023, succeeding Al Monaco; in 2023–24 Enbridge completed acquisitions of three U.S. natural-gas utilities from Dominion Energy.[17] [23]
