Overview

Emerson Electric Co. is a global technology, software and engineering company serving essential industries, with businesses spanning industrial automation, control systems, measurement and analytical instruments, valves, discrete automation, test and measurement, and industrial software. Its operations are organized around Intelligent Devices and Software & Control.[1][2] The company’s stated purpose is to drive innovation that makes the world healthier, safer, smarter and more sustainable.[3]

Emerson has a broad international footprint: as of September 30, 2025, it operated approximately 120 manufacturing locations worldwide, and FY2025 sales were distributed across the Americas, Asia/Middle East/Africa, and Europe. For the fiscal year ended September 30, 2025, net sales were $18.016 billion; company investor materials reported approximately 71,000 employees as of that date.[4] [1]

Products & services

Emerson’s products span process, hybrid and discrete industrial automation. Its DeltaV and Ovation control systems and related software collect and analyze plant measurements and adjust equipment such as valves, pumps, motors and drives. The portfolio also includes distributed and safety-instrumented control systems, SCADA, digital twins, asset-performance management and cybersecurity; AspenTech software provides modeling, simulation and analytics for industrial optimization.[7]

Final Control products include control, isolation, shutoff, pressure-relief and pressure-safety valves, actuators and regulators, including Fisher, Bettis, Crosby, Keystone, KTM, Vanessa and Anderson Greenwood brands. Measurement & Analytical products include instruments for measuring pressure, temperature, level, flow, acoustics, corrosion, pH, conductivity, water quality, toxic gases and flame, including Rosemount, Micro Motion and FLEXIM. As one technical example, Emerson lists the Micro Motion ELITE CMF100L with standard liquid mass-flow accuracy of ±0.10% of rate (±0.05% optional), gas mass-flow accuracy of ±0.35%, and maximum working pressure of 1,450 psig (100 barg).[11]

Other product groups include Discrete Automation equipment—such as solenoid and pneumatic valves, cylinders, actuators, programmable controls, electric linear-motion products and electrical distribution equipment—and Safety & Productivity tools for plumbing, pipe work, electrical work and diagnostics. Test & Measurement offerings include modular instrumentation, data acquisition and control systems, automated test systems and general-purpose development software.[17]

Emerson also offers lifecycle services covering maintenance, reliability and performance, along with startup and commissioning support. For measurement instruments, commissioning services include installation checks, configuration, diagnostics, verification and onsite calibration. The FY2025 report presents sales by product group, but the cited product descriptions do not state product-group revenue as a percentage of company performance.[20] [7]

Geographic presence

For fiscal 2025, Emerson reported sales by customer destination of 51% in the Americas, 30% in Asia, Middle East & Africa, and 19% in Europe. U.S. sales were $7.481 billion and China sales were $1.829 billion. International sales represented 59% of total sales, including U.S. exports.[23]

At September 30, 2025, Emerson had approximately 120 manufacturing locations: 35 in the United States and 85 outside the country, primarily in Europe and Asia, and to a lesser extent in Canada and Latin America. The company also operates administrative, sales, research and development, and distribution facilities in multiple regions.[4] Its 71,000 employees were distributed 37% in the Americas, 37% in Europe, and 26% in Asia, Middle East & Africa.[26] [23]

Business segments

For FY2026, Emerson reports five segments, grouped as Software & Systems (Control Systems & Software and Test & Measurement), Intelligent Devices (Sensors and Final Control), and Safety & Productivity. The percentages below are approximate shares of nine-month FY2026 segment sales through June 30, calculated from the reported segment amounts and their $13.781 billion combined total.[27][28]

Control Systems & Software focuses on industrial automation systems, software and AI, including DeltaV and Ovation control systems and AspenTech asset-optimization software. It recorded $3.332 billion, or about 24.2% of sales.[29] Test & Measurement provides NI-branded test platforms, modular hardware, automated test solutions and software; its $1.268 billion represented about 9.2%.[31]

Sensors supplies sensing and measurement instrumentation for monitoring and optimizing operations, including Rosemount and Micro Motion products; its $3.111 billion was about 22.6%.[33] Final Control provides valves, actuators, regulators and related flow-control products for liquid and gas applications; its $4.469 billion was about 32.4%.[35]

Safety & Productivity serves professionals and industrial environments with tools, connected equipment, and mechanical, electrical, diagnostic and related solutions. Its $1.601 billion represented about 11.6% of sales.[37][28] [27]

Company history

Emerson was founded in St. Louis in 1890 as The Emerson Electric Manufacturing Company by brothers Charles and Alexander Meston, with financial backing from John Wesley Emerson. In 1892, the company focused on AC motors and produced the first electric fans sold in North America.[38] Later acquisitions broadened its businesses, including InSinkErator in 1968, Rosemount in 1976 and Copeland in 1986.[38] In 2000, David N. Farr became CEO, succeeding Charles F. Knight, and the company adopted the name Emerson and a new brand identity.[38]

From 2016 to 2017, Emerson reshaped its portfolio by selling Network Power and Leroy-Somer and Control Techniques, while acquiring Pentair’s Valves & Controls business.[39] Farr retired and Lal Karsanbhai became CEO in 2021.[42]

In 2022, Emerson combined its OSI and geological simulation software businesses with AspenTech, retaining a 55% stake in the resulting company.[43][44] It completed the acquisition of National Instruments in 2023, expanding into test and measurement, and acquired the remaining shares of AspenTech in March 2025.[45] [43]
