Company history

Elisa traces its origins to 1882, when telegraph mechanic Daniel Johannes Wadén received permission to establish a telephone company in Helsinki. The company’s predecessor, Helsinki Telephone Association, later automated telephone exchanges in the Helsinki area in 1929; it became Helsingin Puhelin in 1985.[3] Elisa’s associated company Radiolinja made its first GSM call in 1991 and launched commercial GSM service that year, a milestone in the development of mobile communications.[3]

After a series of telecom mergers in the 1990s, HPY Holding and Helsinki Telephone Corporation merged in 2000, and the holding company took the name Elisa Communications Corporation.[3][28] It adopted the name Elisa Corporation in 2003; in 2005, it acquired a majority stake in Finnish operator Saunalahti.[29][30] In 2013, Elisa acquired PPO Yhtiöt, Kymen Puhelin and Telekarelia. It expanded into Estonia in 2017 through acquisitions of ES Starman and Santa Monica Networks, and Elisa dates the opening of its commercial 5G network to 2019.[3]

From 2020, Elisa broadened its industrial software and network-automation activities through acquisitions including camLine, CalcuQuote, FRINX and Cardinality.[3] Topi Manner was appointed CEO in 2023, with the appointment effective no later than 1 March 2024.[31] [3]
