EDP RENOVAVEIS

Updated

Overview

EDP Renováveis (EDPR), also known as EDP Renewables, is a renewable-electricity company whose business includes wind and solar power generation and energy storage. The company describes its aim as delivering clean energy at scale, competitively and reliably.[1]

Its operations span Iberia, other European markets, North and South America, and Asia-Pacific. In FY2025, EDPR reported installed capacity of 20,391 MW and revenue of €2,688 million; it counted 2,666 employees across its regions.[4] [1]

Products & services

EDP Renewables’ offerings include renewable electricity supplied under customer contracts, sometimes bundled with green certificates as a single performance obligation. Its project portfolio also includes solar-plus-storage and other hybrid developments contracted through power purchase agreements (PPAs) or build-and-transfer arrangements. Examples include Sonrisa in California, described as 200 MW of solar paired with 184 MW of battery energy storage under a 20-year bus-bar PPA, and Margonin & Budzyn in Poland, a 182 MW solar project with 140 MW co-located with operating wind and bundled wind/solar-profile PPAs.[7][8]

For commercial and industrial customers in APAC, EDPR describes on-site solar systems offered through customer-funded capital expenditure or long-term energy-contract models, with client-area monitoring of energy production and consumption and renewable energy certificates. The company reports 1.4 GWp installed in APAC as of March 2026.[9]

At 2025 year-end, EDPR reported 40.6 GW of installed capacity, comprising 76% wind and 24% solar; this is a capacity mix, not a revenue or generation share. Its 2025 capacity additions included 0.96 GW of solar PV, 0.34 GW of battery energy storage, 0.56 GW of onshore wind and 0.12 GW of offshore wind.[10][11] [7]

Geographic presence

EDP Renováveis reported a global portfolio of 19 GW and renewable generation of 40.6 TWh in FY2025. Its geographic regions are Iberia, Rest of Europe, North America, South America and Asia-Pacific.[12] Its FY2025 project pipeline included projects under construction or development in the United States, Brazil, Spain, the United Kingdom, Italy, Greece, Poland, France, Hungary, Singapore, Germany, Chile and Portugal; this list describes development activity, not necessarily operating assets in each country.[13]

At year-end 2025, the company had 2,666 employees: 969 in North America, 874 in Iberia, 379 in Rest of Europe, 305 in Asia-Pacific and 139 in South America.[5] [12]

Business segments

EDP Renováveis reports four geographic operating segments: Europe, North America, South America and APAC. The company describes its segments as renewable-energy generation businesses managed and reviewed separately by geographic region; the segment distinction is geographic rather than by technology. Europe covers Spain, Portugal, Belgium, France, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, the United Kingdom, Hungary and Greece; North America covers the United States, Canada and Mexico; South America covers Brazil and Chile; and APAC covers South Korea, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, China, Taiwan, Australia and Japan.[14]

For 2025, the reported recurring EBITDA mix was approximately 38% Europe, 56% North America, 3% South America and 3% APAC.[20] As an alternative contribution measure, calculations from reported 2025 segment revenues indicate approximate shares of 38.8% Europe, 52.3% North America, 3.8% South America and 5.2% APAC, based on total reportable-segment revenue of €2,693.6 million and including institutional-partnership income in North America.[21] [14]

Company history

EDP Renováveis (EDPR) was incorporated on 4 December 2007 as the EDP Group’s renewables-generation company. Earlier that year, EDP agreed to acquire U.S. wind developer Horizon Wind Energy, supporting the group’s expansion in wind power. EDPR was spun off and listed on Euronext Lisbon on 4 June 2008, with an IPO price of €8 per share. By September 2009, it reported 5,577 MW of installed wind capacity across eight countries.[22]

EDPR’s first wind farm in Brazil, the 70 MW Tramandaí project, was fully commissioned in May 2011. In December 2020, it completed the purchase of Viesgo’s renewable business, a 0.5 GW portfolio in Spain and Portugal. Miguel Stilwell de Andrade became EDPR chairman and CEO in January 2021, and in February 2022 the company completed its acquisition of a 91% stake in Sunseap, establishing its Asia-Pacific platform.[27] [22]
