Edison International is a U.S. electric-power company whose principal business is Southern California Edison (SCE), an investor-owned utility that supplies and delivers electricity. SCE serves approximately 5.4 million customer accounts across a roughly 50,000-square-mile service area in Southern California. Edison International’s principal product is electricity supplied by Southern California Edison (SCE). For customers on bundled service, SCE provides electricity supply and delivery; for customers who buy power from a community choice aggregator or another authorized supplier, SCE continues to provide transmission and distribution service. Its delivery infrastructure includes transmission lines, distribution networks and substations.[9][10][11]
SCE obtains most of the power it delivers through purchases, supplemented by generation from facilities in which it has an interest, including hydroelectric and natural-gas plants. SCE-owned generation supplied about 19% of the electricity delivered to customers in 2024. Company history
Edison International traces its origins to an electric-light company established in Visalia, California, in 1886. Its principal utility, Southern California Edison, was formed in 1909 through the consolidation of predecessor electric companies.[24][25]
In 1988, the business adopted a holding-company structure under SCEcorp, separating the regulated utility from other energy businesses. SCEcorp changed its name to Edison International in 1996. A later change came when its non-utility power business, Edison Mission Energy, filed for bankruptcy in 2012; its reorganization led to the sale of substantially all its assets to NRG Energy in 2014.[24][26] [24][25][26]
