Business segments
For FY2025, Eastman Chemical reported four operating segments. **Advanced Materials** focuses on polymers, films, and plastics for transportation; durables and electronics; building and construction; medical and pharmaceutical; and consumables markets. Segment sales were approximately $2.88 billion, or **32.9%** of consolidated sales revenue.[30][31]
**Additives & Functional Products** supplies materials and additives for food, feed and agriculture; transportation; water treatment and energy; personal care and wellness; building and construction; consumables; and durables and electronics. FY2025 sales were approximately $2.88 billion (**32.9%**). **Chemical Intermediates** produces acetyls, oxos, and plasticizers, supplying Eastman businesses and external industrial markets; sales were approximately $1.93 billion (**22.0%**).[10][32][31]
**Fibers** includes acetate tow and triacetin used mainly in filtration media, cellulosic yarn and staple fibers for apparel, furnishings and industrial fabrics, nonwovens, and cellulose acetate flake and acetyl raw materials. FY2025 sales were approximately $1.05 billion (**12.0%**). Shares are calculated as each segment’s sales divided by consolidated sales of $8.752 billion; the company also reported $17 million in “Other,” so segment percentages do not sum to 100%. Eastman additionally presents product-line/end-market and customer-geography sales views; these are supplementary breakdowns, distinct from its four operating segments.[19][22][31] [30][10][32][19][22][31]
Company history
Eastman Chemical’s history began in 1920, when George Eastman established Tennessee Eastman in Kingsport, Tennessee, to supply chemicals for Eastman Kodak’s photographic business. The company later broadened its production into materials including acetate yarn and cellulosic plastics; Tenite was introduced in 1929.[33][34]
Over the following decades, Eastman expanded its manufacturing and product range, including opening a coal-gasification-based acetyl chemicals facility in Kingsport in 1983. It became independent of Kodak through a spin-off on January 4, 1994, and began trading as a public company.[35][36]
From the 2000s, Eastman shifted its portfolio away from several commodity businesses, divesting assets and operations including resins, inks and monomers, polyethylene, and PET. It expanded specialty chemicals and performance materials through its acquisitions of Solutia in 2012 and Taminco in 2014.[37]
In 2020–2021, the company announced circularity goals and plans for a molecular-recycling facility in Kingsport; the facility reported on-spec production and revenue in March 2024.[38][39][40] [33][34][35][36][37][38][39][40][33][34][35][36][38][39][40]
