Overview
DTE Energy Co. is a Detroit-based energy company centered on two regulated Michigan utilities: DTE Electric, which provides electricity to approximately 2.3 million customers in southeastern Michigan, and DTE Gas, which supplies natural gas to approximately 1.4 million customers across the state. Its nonutility businesses provide services including renewable natural gas, industrial energy solutions, and energy marketing and trading in other U.S. markets.[1][2]
DTE states its purpose as “We improve lives with our energy.” It reported $15.8 billion in operating revenue for 2025, and a 2025 company presentation described its workforce as nearly 10,000 employees.[3][1][4] [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][1][2][3][4]
Products & services
DTE Energy’s principal product is electricity supplied through DTE Electric, which generates, purchases, distributes and sells power to residential, commercial and industrial customers in southeastern Michigan. Its generation sources include natural gas, coal, nuclear, pumped hydro, wind and solar. Customers can also enroll in MIGreenPower Flex to match 5%–100% of their monthly electricity use with renewable energy.[12][13]
DTE Gas purchases, stores, transports, distributes and sells natural gas in Michigan. In addition to delivered gas, it sells natural-gas storage and transportation capacity; its four underground storage fields have approximately 139 billion cubic feet of working-gas capacity.[14][15]
Outside its utilities, DTE Vantage develops renewable-energy projects that produce electricity or pipeline-quality gas from sources including landfill and agricultural methane. It also provides customer-site energy services such as power generation, steam, chilled water, wastewater treatment and compressed air. DTE’s Energy Trading business markets and trades electricity, natural gas, coal, capacity, storage and other energy products through physical and financially settled contracts.[16][17][18][19] [12][14][15][16][17][18][19][13]
Geographic presence
DTE Energy’s utility operations are concentrated in Michigan. DTE Electric serves approximately 2.3 million customers in southeastern Michigan, while DTE Gas serves approximately 1.4 million customers throughout the state. DTE Gas’s distribution, storage and transportation properties are located in Michigan.[6][20][21]
Its DTE Vantage business has a broader U.S. footprint: its renewable-gas recovery operations span 22 sites in 10 states—Arizona, California, Michigan, North Carolina, New York, Ohio, South Dakota, Texas, Utah and Wisconsin. DTE Energy’s principal executive offices are in Detroit, Michigan. The company reports revenue by business segment rather than providing a geographic revenue breakdown.[22][1][23] [6][20][21][22][24][23][1]
Business segments
DTE Energy reports four business segments. **Electric** generates, purchases, distributes and sells electricity, principally in southeastern Michigan. **Gas** purchases, stores, transports, distributes and sells natural gas in Michigan and sells storage and transportation capacity.[10][11]
**DTE Vantage** develops renewable-energy projects that sell electricity or pipeline-quality gas and provides customized energy solutions to industrial, commercial and institutional customers. **Energy Trading** markets and trades energy products, including power and natural gas.[25][26][27]
Based on 2025 net income attributable to DTE Energy, Electric contributed approximately **67%** of the four segments’ combined earnings, Gas **17%**, DTE Vantage **9%** and Energy Trading **7%**. These shares exclude a $268 million loss in Corporate and Other; they are not shares of consolidated net income.[1] [10][11][25][26][27][28][1]
Company history
DTE Energy traces its gas-service roots to the City of Detroit Gas Co., organized by Lemuel Davis in 1849. Michigan Consolidated Gas Company was organized in 1886, and Detroit Edison, the predecessor of DTE’s electric utility, was organized in 1903.[29][30]
DTE Energy was incorporated in 1995 and became Detroit Edison’s holding company on January 1, 1996. Its 2001 merger with MCN Energy Group brought Michigan Consolidated Gas into the group, joining the electric and gas utility businesses under DTE. Detroit Edison and Michigan Consolidated Gas adopted the names DTE Electric and DTE Gas in 2013. In 2021, DTE spun off its pipeline, storage and gathering business as the independent company DT Midstream.[30][31][32][33] [29][30][31][32][33]
